The Selvas used here are Yamahas, every part of them is Yamaha except the cover. Even that is likely Yamaha but just painted white. Not sure why they tend to have more issues than the Yamahas though, its a strange one.
There is a side you can lay the Yamahas down and get no problem, lay it on the other side and you get similar to what you mentioned.

Im way out of touch, always had yamahas when I raced. But selva were popular in certain circles and classes. The RNLI used to use a mixture of all sorts, guess it was down to price on the day they went out to tender.
For me if your buying new from a local dealer assuming the price difference isnt huge, go with the folk you trust.

The user might be the problem.
I'm curious about the side you can lay down.
I suppose that it has more room for the oil on a side and also the piston rings are oriented on the opposite side

I have got a 90hp mariner optimax 2 stroke and a 75hp honda 4 stroke.
The optimax is on a 19' fletcher we got last year when we managed to get a mooring spot.
We got the honda on a 22' fisher that we got for this year.
Both engines are fairly modern (2012) and are both running the same size prop.
I would not say either 2t or 4t was 'better'
They are both well suited to the boats they are fitted on. The 2t is about 15% lighter than the 4t.
Although lower power the honda has more torque. Top speed is not much slower on the fishing boat when you take into account its 3' longer, 4' wider and maybe 200kg heavier.
I would not automatically say get a 4t for fishing. We had a couple of good sessions last year with the 2t when we went after work, got the revs up once out of the harbour and blasted accross the bay for an hours plaice fishing before blasting back again.
On the other extent we have been out 5miles offshore this year in some fairly heavy waves and the low end torque of the 4t means you can chug back in slowly at low speed without having to concentrate so hard on driving the boat and keeping one hand on the throttle. Not something I would like to do on the fletcher but that's more because it does not have a cabin with doors on!
If the family had come out on the boat last year and we had used it for general boating I would have been more than happy with it. As it was only me and the lads going fishing we got a dedicated fishing boat for this year.

Good for an open top boat as it's just a rpm and trim gauge on the dash then anything else you can see on the phone and dont have to leave any electronics on it when moored up.
The honda has nmea2k so again, digital dash on the fishfinder display but that display is locked in the cabin.
Both are a revelation in fuel consumption compared to the last thing I had which was a mid 90's Yamaha I think.
Heed the above comments about a dealer as well.
The nearest marine dealer of any sort is an hour+ away from me so I do everything by phone.
I have serviced enough cars that you would think I would know what's what but a good dealers advice is worth paying the extra for genuine parts for.
I normally ask around the harbour for recommendations on a dealer for whatever engine it is then give them a ring, tell them I want to give it a full service etc and ask them to email me a list of the parts/bits I need.
When I got the mercury the dealer added a length of fuel hose and a rubber valve for the fuel system.
£130 for parts that were not mentioned as service items in the manual and looked fine to me.
Gave him a ring back and he explained the original fuel hose delaminated on the inside and damaged the rubber valve thing.
Sure enough, when I took it apart the inside of the hose was in pieces and the valve thing was holding together by a nats whisker!
Same thing when I got the honda. Dealer put 2 thermostats and 2 thermostat housings on the list at £100+. Again, all that looked fine from the outside and not on the honda service schedule.
Questioned it and he said the housings rot from the inside. One is mounted directly above the starter motor and one directly above the ecu. If either fails/leaks it's a £1-1.5k bill.
When I took them off to change them one fell into bits. Only the paint holding it together.
I would suggest that even if you buy a brand new engine, don't buy a brand new model.
Get something that's been out for a few years so the dealers have had a chance to find out what goes wrong with them and save you some grief.
A warranty is great but it's always cracking weather when the boat is out of the water being repaired!

Thanks, good point on a friendly dealer. I see Mercury ceased Optimax production May 2018, so will be a 4T.
ln the past I have only had engines serviced by the dealer when under warranty then done it myself.

I do all my own servicing but get genuine parts from a decent dealer as it's worth paying the extra for the knowledge you get given foc with it!
I think sales on new 2 strokes are banned in Europe now anyway. Certainly for commercial use they are.

Think the ban is on small 2Ts as they don't pass emmissions tests. The bigger ones have ECUs and injection, so do pass. Apparently small 2T sales on the Channel Ils are OK, as not EU and it is not unknown for people to buy there and forget to mention it on return..

For a lightly used fishing boat that will see probably under 70 hours a year use max i think that limits it to Mercury or possibly Tohatsu if I can find a nearby dealer as I think the nearest is an hour and a half's drive away - pity as it sounds a really good engine as it is a Tohatsu badged Honda for a lot less cash than a Honda.

If you can still get 2strokes at 60hp for only 70hrs a year it might work out a lot cheaper to run.
I think my optimax used about £20 of (genuine mercury) 2t oil over the 80 odd hours I did on it last year.
The BF75 honda is £90 odd for the oil and filter for the annual change regardless of how few hours you do.
Will add up to a big difference in running costs vs hrs if you need to have it serviced annually to keep the warranty valid for the next 5yrs.
