That's the nasty stuff that gets left after a car fire, released from brake components etc and is a sticky black goo. Actually created a whole new H&S nightmare for Fire Rescue crews apparently.

Strictly speaking, the sticky black goo contains HF as well as other stuff. Pure HF is colourless.
The first place I heard about the goo a number of years ago was in a Haynes car workshop manual. They have only carried this warning in recent years.

There are electrolytic machines... typically put out upto something like 24V DC 16A and use a phosphoric acid based solution. Other flavours of acid can also be used, i've played around before with a battery charger and citric acid which worked but was very slow. I decided i needed a better powersource and then it joined the list of projects that never got finished

Aside from price for occasional users their biggest drawback has always been getting into nooks and cranies- they traditionally use a solid 'wand' fitted with different shaped heads covered in a consumable pad. Posh ones pumped the acid through the wand.

The latest take on them has ditched the solid wand in favour of a brush which looks to be a step forward. Goes by the immaginative name of TIG Brush

Dave don't mig with stainless wire, Its messy, just get a small spool of stainless wire and tack in 3 places around the tube, then put it in your car and drive to my place and i will tig it together for you while you wait, bring beer, lots of it

Glad you asked mate, i'll be making an exhaust system for my hotrod.
This will be stainless,i have only got a mig, so what wire, what type
of wire.
