From what I've seen from some welding contractors is that wages are really going down for them, some people working for peanuts and not enough jobs for high skilled welders so rather odd how they say in the article there in short supply not sure where they get their figures from.

As I said earlier....thats what happened at Lindsay Oil Refinery......Shipped in (literally) a load of men who lived on the ship to avoid the rules on minimum wage......there was a mass demonstration but nothing much changed..These things are usually a sop to local councillors and politicians to grease the wheels of a new project, especially controversial ones - local job opportunities for local people, just don't rock the boat.
Probably find they ship in a load of French welders to do the work anyway.

Clever thinking on some ones part , all the ethics etc aside it just goes to show that where theres a profit to be made rules and their interpretation and application can be some what flexible.
and they couldnt do the critical welds....a friend of mine got called in....all the way from Barnsley
I was on that job, ( it was LOR). they were there over a year and when they left the job was a year behind schedule. It was a kin disaster. groups of six with a leader (heh heh) buy cheap buy twice. They were nearly all Italian.
I also was interviewed in the demo outside the refinery, but a lot of it was chopped as I asked where mr Brown was cos your countries falling apart.

Bidding on these big projects is very tight, you get one go at winning the project on a price. Cheap labour on a boat is nothing new all part of cut throat pricing to get the contract.
When I was in Angola most of our contractors were gradually replaced from Brits at the commissioning phase to French, Portuguese and South Africans due to ecomomics their day rates were 1/3 of the Brits. Some were good some were dire and didnt last.

Probably tactical and strategic by Sizewell , training up one trick welders that couldn’t get a job anywhere else in the industry is probably a smart move.Hitholes like Sizewell are big into H&S, probably got separate courses and ticketed operatives to use hammers,chisels,chipping hammers,welding rod passing and grinders.
Imagine the shock they would get if they ended up in my place after working there, laying in a puddle with a stick welder under a broken down machine in the middle of nowhere, that would be a shock to the system.
