Most of the big places will have some sort of apprenticeship scheme

I have a diploma and tech certs ,just need to complete the work based NVQ

Depends on the firm buddy if you can pass the weld test then I'd guess yes

Ok I'm a little more awake there are better more skilled structural steel welder fabricators on here then me by far but if your looking to get in the trade you are more qualified then me. When I started it was through my father's firend I got in to this industry. Send out CVS with a cover email or drop in to local firms and have a chat. You may have to start on a lower wage untill your at a good level although I don't know what your skills are you might just be able to pass a weld test. When I started I had to.
First learn how to weld 15 mm plate tee fillet 12mm fillet weld 3 passes
And learn to gas cut with oxcey fuel cut splays notches and the like
Then try to grasp the drawings still trying to grasp the more complex things
Using gantry cranes and things
Have you experienced in spray arc mig/mag welding.

Iv welded 12mm multi runs ,butts fillets both flat and vertical ,but not since college and never done flux core ,can use bandsaws,plasma,oxyfuel,guillotine etc ,i think a day or two i could pick it up like i never left it

To be honest firms are struggling to get people as people don't want to do this trade anymore as they can earn more money sat at a desk

Agree with @bR39Da also although basic learn how to change wire you would be surprised how many people don't know how to swap out 15 kg reels I really wish I was kidding

I have all my own tools ,i have a 3m speedglass airfed mask ,and i can also change wire,gas,liner and set tension etc ,thanks for the advice fellas it goes a long way

You do the bolting n drilling etc or plater/fabricator do it?

I do the welding and fabrication stuff and help out on the jig sometimes not very adverse in setting out but as our company don't supply us with impact guns or the right size spanners I tend to supply if I know in advance and bolt up with a more experienced fitter
