Id say they were useful and affordable tbh.The further I get into it, the more I realise that the square head Colchester lathes are very overrated and probably owe their reputation to their predecessors and the shear volumes produced.
Spares prices have been driven up by demand and dealers like nobilla driving up prices for example nobila wanted twice as much for a used headstock oil pump as I could get a new one for.
Colchester have the best spindle bearings money can buy and full screw cutting. Being small they’re not fatiguing to use. They were also affordable new.
I mock a pal who bought a brand new ten foot centres mastiff in 1978 (im a dsg man) and he pointed out the lathe, mill and his premises cost less than a brand new dsg!
Ive got a shortbed mastiff as its my go to machine for metric screwcutting, why? Because even my late dsg needs three changes of gear train to get full thread selection! A right pita when 90% of your work is screw cutting.
Cant beat peeling of half inch a side of en24 with my big dsg though
