One thing I can tell you about PC/tablets/phones.

They are like cars - one minute they are new - then suddenely they are "old & tired" and need replacing.

Bought my first pc at their Tottenham Court Road branch. A 286 with a 20MB HDD and 5 1/4" floppy. Green, monochrome(?) monitor.

I bought my last iPad Pro in 2016 and only replaced it late last year only because the battery was starting to struggle to last a whole working day. I still use it just have it on a charging dock on the desk.

I think I remember paying less than £600 for it at the time.

Used every day, multiple hours per day, for 6 years
Never worry about viruses, dodgy website or popups
Never worry about password security (unique password for everything auto generated and synced to phone)
Never worry about data being compromised if its lost
More or less A4 screen for reading & typing

Not long after I got it I ditched my laptop and haven’t needed another. Is it expensive? Yes. Do I think it’s worth it? Completely.

As the Dude says, that’s just, like, my opinion, man.


should also add: I do use an android tablet at work; some companies make apps that are android only that I need to use. I find the OS less intuitive and more clumsy and of course there is no protection from apps doing and sending more data that you want them to. So they’re more flexible because the architecture is intentionally less secure. Horses for courses.

I have a work iPhone, laptop and now also surface pro. They only get used for work stuff

Then I have a personal iPhone, a laptop (very rarely used) and several iPads, typing away on the latest iPad Pro with big screen - this is my most used personal device, only ever used for surfing the web. To be fair it’s probably only used for about 10% of its capacity, but I like it, find it easy to use and it never goes wrong

I have an old Sony Vaio laptop in garage, bought around 2005. Thing can’t run anything higher than Win XP. Battery is dead but works on mains.

I must be the only person who uses whatsapp on a desktop.

I use it on everything, desktop, phone, laptop and tablet. It's built into Opera browser sidebar. My laptop is really a notebook which would probably be an alternative for the original poster, CCL do one similar for under £80, handy if you just want to surf the net. I've had mine a couple of years and the battery holds up well.

So, a few people have mentioned it - can you have whatsapp on a desktop now to save replying on the phone if you have the laptop on? Presuming faceache needs to know your most intimate details to do this since they own it, so question also is, is it possible if you dont have a faceless account?

I'm not on facebook but I use whatsapp on everything. Sign in using a QR code via your phone camera and away you go.

My 10" tablet with no visible name, bought a long time ago for not much money, is getting a bit second hand - it only fires up when I plug a cable in one of the micro USB ports. The charging port, and the on/off switch failed a long time ago. Takes a long time to respond to commands, sometimes locks up totally requiring paperclip into the reset hole

However it mostly kept on doing what I wanted it to do - connect to hotel wifi and thence the net and allow me to access this forum amongst others when travelling for work.

Doesn't need to play super duper movies, doesn't need amazing sound quality, doesn't need many mega pixel cameras.

Any suggestions?

Samsung Active Tab has a built in sim card and stylus pen for writing, sketching and faster browsing. I'd be lost without it.

Oh, you (insert lots of rude words here) . . . I just bought a tablet for a bit more than that . . . and you are right, it looks a good alternative . . . maybe I need a spare . . .

I don't use FB - I reckon it is unhealthy - at least with whatsapp - you only message people in your phonebook (your choice)

Whatsapp is just a text messaging service that doesnt charge for picture messages to me. The only reason i use it is because picture texts are charged for. I agree completely with your comment on FB. Never had an account. Never will. Forums are the closest thing to social media that I do.

I'm not an Apple fan boy or Tech geek but Ipads work really well, even old ones are perfectly fine for surfing the web. If you an Iphone then benefits increase, if they are both on the same apple ID then any photos you take while out and about with your phone are immediately available on the Ipad. I know that is possible on other platforms but it works seamlessly. When I had a work Ipad and phone it was almost daily that I used that facility.

Apple products tend to be the one bit of modern tech that retains value, if buy an Iphone, put a case and a screen protector on from day one in two years your will get a pretty good chunk of your money back.

I understand the reasons many people don't like Apple products but for a large portion of people some of the reasons are irrelevant.

EE seem to charge - 25 or 50p i think! Virgin did too when they used the EE network. Whatsapp seems safest to avoid it.

Whatsapp is owned by facebook - there is no adverts - I have yet to work out - how they earn from it?
