I have a Samsung tablet and really like it. Its five years old. Good screen. Works really well. I moved from Apple to Samsung when Apple killed a perfectly good ipad2 with an update - of course, they dont allow you to roll back (unlike all android systems - can be done but not easy) so thats it - Old but working one minute. Useless the next - so slow and laggy its unusable, type something and wait five minutes for the letters to appear.
Anyhow. There are loads of cheap tablets out there now so I dont see a need to spend huge amounts to get a decent one now.

Yea, expensive, but a brilliant piece of kit. I'm on my 4th iPad in 15 years or so. They do everything I ever asked, play movies with crystal clear pic, carry 1000 ebooks, dozens of movies, they surf the web etc.
I carried one all over the world while working offshore, it is a god send when communications are down.

To be fair they are expensive and suited for folk like me that aren’t very clever with IT stuff. If you are more competent then cheaper alternatives are available
For me, Apple provide a product and service for a particular demographic, not everyone likes that, doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing
Personally I like the confidence of it always working without trouble and it’s ability to talk seamlessly with other Apple products, plus I set it up all by myself, no 10 year old IT experts were required

Last year got an iPad Air for Christmas , never been a tablet/smartphone lover , but damn I have to admit it is worth the money . Very easy to be used , reliable , fast .
Got to spend a couple of days on it because it's completely different from Android , expecially with the special tricks to move/close/open/rotate/whatever things but now I can say that I would not go back with Android .
I use for work and I love it .
The cool thing is also that you can connect it to Iphone and Mac and share easily mails , pictures , apps .. just with some finger taps or scrolling things - almost impossible to be done with other brands.
If you don't want to spend too much , go with Samsung .

I have feet in all three camps, so I may be qualified to comment here!
For value for money you can’t beat Amazon fire tablets, but they are very locked down (no play store, but you can add it fairly easily). Our kids both have them and for general use, basic browsing movie watching etc they are good enough. Be prepared to do a bit of digging to add play store, and of course in future an update may mean it becomes not available so it’s a chance you take. When on offer you can get a 10” one for around £80.
Our “home” tablet is a Samsung S6 lite - excellent tablet, with a good stylus so you can do fairly decent drawings/sketches and access small fiddly tick boxes etc without resorting to prodding at the screen. The equivalent iPad with a stylus was much more expensive. It also has expandable memory (micro sd card) something which I don’t think you get on iPads but I could be wrong.
My work phone is apple, and we have an iMac computer. We also had a gen 2 iPad for a fair few years until it bricked after a forced update. Expensive but they work (in general, apart from the iPad which slowed to a crawl then stopped).
If I was looking for one again I would have no hesitation in getting another Samsung, the s6 lite we have is very good. I’d consider apple but they are expensive and non expandable memory means I would probably look elsewhere.

No problems so far touch wood!
I had a Kindle then a Kindle Fire and although cheap I wouldn't get another as it wouldn't work on everything I wanted it to.
I've also got an iPhone for work and also had one at my previous firm and it's the most cussed at hated piece of tech I ever have to deal with!
My head just doesn't "get it" and probably never will!
The rest of my family have iPhones and they do work together well with the iPads etc but they are not for me.
Another reason I won't have an i product is the reasons already mentioned about locking up working devices cost of repairs etc.
I also think there should be no forum posting allowed after 9.30pm as everybody is tired and it gets a bit shouty

I actually had a Kindle reader as my first 'tablet'. That was a cool piece of gear, for not much money, but only for reading and storing books on. However, dick head here eventually left it onboard a plane during a hurried transfer, while heading offshore, so my first iPad was pretty much an airport duty free panic buy, as I didn't fancy 6 weeks offshore with nothing to read.
I didn't realise that the only way to load stuff onto an iPad back then was by wifi, and we didn't have that offshore, but I was given an app to install that sorted me out, something to do with iTunes.

Haha. Similar to me. I dont mind the iphone, i just dont like it. Very restrictive if you want to use non-apple approved software too whereas Android lets you work around it and you only drop the security while you install something non-google play approved. One thing that does annoy me about the apple products i have used is the closed memory... there are never SD card slots and once you have used the space up you have to use their cloud service - fine if you want to pay for something you dont want but i dont want to!

I've changed screens and batteries on a couple, wife's Fire and a Huawei tablet. There's usually a video to watch on something like youtube or the popular supply and repair sites like newpower99. Lenovo tab10 looks pretty straightforward

I bought my last iPad Pro in 2016 and only replaced it late last year only because the battery was starting to struggle to last a whole working day. I still use it just have it on a charging dock on the desk.
I think I remember paying less than £600 for it at the time.
Used every day, multiple hours per day, for 6 years
Never worry about viruses, dodgy website or popups
Never worry about password security (unique password for everything auto generated and synced to phone)
Never worry about data being compromised if its lost
More or less A4 screen for reading & typing
Not long after I got it I ditched my laptop and haven’t needed another. Is it expensive? Yes. Do I think it’s worth it? Completely.
As the Dude says, that’s just, like, my opinion, man.
should also add: I do use an android tablet at work; some companies make apps that are android only that I need to use. I find the OS less intuitive and more clumsy and of course there is no protection from apps doing and sending more data that you want them to. So they’re more flexible because the architecture is intentionally less secure. Horses for courses.

I've had an Apollo phone, currently got an android Chinese spy phone, and use Linux on an old retired ex-work PC - so I'm probably an IT imbecile rather than idiot

Some years ago I would have agreed with what can a tablet do a phone can't . . . but with eyes of apparently decreasing ability, the tablet just makes it easier as its bigger. It only ever gets used on work trips, when I lug an expensive work laptop around for CAD and other exciting stuff linked back to the work servers. A tablet sits nicely, and lightly, in one of the pockets of the laptop bag, with my kindle paperthingie, and is easy to decant into security trays and back in airports etc.
Home use I used the old PC, as I prefer the screen, a proper keyboard and mouse. I put towards an Ipad for the ex some years ago - while it was nice to use, for the use I put it to, its several hundred quid of unused abilities. The tablet I'm complaining about was bought around the same time for 60 quid - I reckon it's lasted ten years. IT still works, but . . .

I much prefer - desktop (all in one type PC) - with huge screen and proper keyboard and mouse.
I do use tablets for car diagnostics (mostly roadtesting) - but also use same software on desktops in the workshop (as most interfaces are bluetooth or wifi now).
Phone - well I use it as phone. I may answer a text on it. I must be the only person who uses whatsapp on a desktop.
I am not fast with a touchscreen - I can do it - but not like teenager...
