Want a new tablet - suggestions please

My 10" tablet with no visible name, bought a long time ago for not much money, is getting a bit second hand - it only fires up when I plug a cable in one of the micro USB ports. The charging port, and the on/off switch failed a long time ago. Takes a long time to respond to commands, sometimes locks up totally requiring paperclip into the reset hole

However it mostly kept on doing what I wanted it to do - connect to hotel wifi and thence the net and allow me to access this forum amongst others when travelling for work.

Doesn't need to play super duper movies, doesn't need amazing sound quality, doesn't need many mega pixel cameras.

Any suggestions?

Next time you’re going away look in the concessions airside.

I got my Kindle Fire 7 for £25 at LHR when I was going to somewhere for a job not long back.

All I use it for is what you say above.

I've used a few generic Android tablets, last one was decent but they usually need a fair bit of tweaking

I've got a Fire tablet, it's not very quick and if I don't put it in airplane when I'm not using it the battery goes downhill fast. It is a few years old though.

Few Samsung tablets here. Can't fault them. The kindle fires never seemed to last long and afaik it's still a hack to get the play store running on them.

I’m… not entirely incompetent… and my recommendation is also an apple ipad, from CEX. I’m on my second iPad Pro and it is without a doubt the most value for money tech device I have.

kindles are sold at a loss. If the reasons for that don’t bother you then the hardware is still not as good as apple in my experience.

Mine did that. I was on my the verge of throwing it out then it did an update and it’s all fine.

Just in phones. Android has a 71% share of the phone market.

(Though In the state's it's more like iOS 52% iirc )

Os both pc and phone android still tops.

I recommend Apple. I don't like them, i think that they are overpriced, but, a second hand from cex is a solid option, buy the latest generation you can afford, so the updates keep coming longer.

They tend to just work.

I'd buy a fire HD. But I don't like Apple.

The components inside are similar or the same with minor differences.
The drivers (software) that tells the computer how to talk to and use them can be optimised to run very well.

Pc. 1000s of laptops
Pc 1000s of tower configurations.
Many many different drivers and conflicts between the hardware crop up and cause issues.


But I can double the ram in my system for a few hundred quid.

I dread to think what apple will charge for the same upgrade.

Same for graphics cards etc.


Pc are made with servicing in mind.

Apple actively discouraged repair and upgrading of there hardware.

So for the sake of right to repair apple can do one mate.

Mum's just bought a Samsung Tab S6 Lite, she's very happy with it, it's a big improvement on her 7 year old Tab A, and that was a big improvement on the Kindle she had before it.

Personally, I don't know why anyone uses a tablet, I see it as an awkward intermediate between a phone and a laptop. A phone will do anything a tablet will do, but the screen might be a bit small. If I need a bigger screen, I'll get my laptop where I not only have a bigger screen, but a much better keyboard, usually "fuller" software, and a faster processor. The exception would be an E-reader where you literally just use it for reading, or a Remarkable where you write/draw with a stylus, but those are quite specific use cases. The normal, iPad style tablet is completely useless in my eyes.

But there are millions of folk like me that don’t know how or will never open a computer

They can’t do one. They are doing very well servicing a market

Very much like modern cars. Some members will get into the brains of a car and some will get stuck in
