Wallpaper, apparently 40 years is too long

We still have woodchip in the hall, stairs and landing and the only reason it's still there is that it's the only thing holding up the horse hair plaster.
Unfortunately the puppy seems to think it's time we sorted it as he's now removed a few patches.

A house we moved into when I was a kid (60 years ago) had so many layers of paper it was level with the skirting boards. When we started stripping it off there were cockroaches living behind it. It was a council house and they had to come in and set sticky traps all over the place before it was habitable.

I seem to recall from years back, cockroaches will feed from the old starch wallpaper paste.

I like qickes or wickes paint, my go to brand, covers well and a good price.Not noticed fading.

When we renovated/rebuilt / knocked down and started from scratch our cottage I removed a quantity of wall paper . Made very interesting reading and was dated 1930 something. Could try that again using perhaps the Sun daily rag.

At last count I have 7 different external wall constructions in this house. Jack and his brothers had a field day over the years building extensions etc.

The lounge where I'm sitting has 1" tile battens on breeze. Over that 1"4 hardboard (instead of pb) with woodchip on top. When the woodchip comes off it'll take the walls with it.

When I bought the house in 1980 it was woodchip everywhere. The problem was that they had painted the walls a very dark colour but without moving any of the shelving or radiators or sideboards. Naked woodchip plus dark paint. It had to go. A lot of plaster came off with the woodchip. I had a £30k mortgage at 17% interest (yes, 17%) so money was tight. I lashed up the walls the best I could and re-papered.

This time I'm paying someone to do it. SWMBO has been on about it for the 20 years, I've finally succumbed. And I bet it won't improve my sex life!

At our last house, all the rooms were papered, very little wastage. Built 1938, walls had never been re plastered, grey in colour and as tough as old boots. Steam stripper to get old paper off, only plastering done was after I'd chased the walls for more sockets.

Bungalow we now have was built 30 years ago and every dam room has loose plaster, usually 2 or 3 walls 90% on each. Rooms are all on the large size so they get re plastered and painted, to old and knackered to do it myself, I'll prep (remove plaster and paint), then pay someone else to do the hard work.

Only 2 more rooms and the hallway after this - bathroom with mermaid panel (26 panels) in terracotta - lounge and 51' hallway (that needs new ceiling and one side plastered.

And just to add to the fun laminate flooring through out, which we both detest.

If you want fancy quality wall papers go to an interior decorators, they will have pattern books for very very over priced proper paper. Lie down when you ask the price.

I paid a friend to skim a couple of walls for my daughter, rather than go and paper them for her.
