Wallpaper, apparently 40 years is too long

When we built our extension (large) 20 years ago i had to take a lot of plaster off walls that we were keeping or joining to. Plus their were ceilings to come down. I found multiple levels of ancient bilious green distemper, nappy brown 70's acid trip wallpaper, artex analglypta & emulsion paint, some of it had been covered over with plasterboard & some not.
I used a sharp narrow spade to get it all off & down & it took days & days living in a powered respirator.
Once it was all plastered it got painted with vinyl matt emulsion& that was that. Lifes to short to hang wallpaper, dont forget that you will throw a large percentage away matching joins.

Matching joins .. if you have two rolls on the go you'll not be wasting as much .

At our last house, all the rooms were papered, very little wastage. Built 1938, walls had never been re plastered, grey in colour and as tough as old boots. Steam stripper to get old paper off, only plastering done was after I'd chased the walls for more sockets.

Bungalow we now have was built 30 years ago and every dam room has loose plaster, usually 2 or 3 walls 90% on each. Rooms are all on the large size so they get re plastered and painted, to old and knackered to do it myself, I'll prep (remove plaster and paint), then pay someone else to do the hard work.

Only 2 more rooms and the hallway after this - bathroom with mermaid panel (26 panels) in terracotta - lounge and 51' hallway (that needs new ceiling and one side plastered.

And just to add to the fun laminate flooring through out, which we both detest.

I've had light nut brown 10 mm thick carbonised bamboo flooring put down in our kitchen with the grain running the length of the kitchen to give the impression it's a lot bigger than the 12 foot wide by 21 foot long it is , instead of the easier way of them putting it across the room & making it look a lot smaller .

The "Gentlemen " who did it ignored my advice to buy two extra lungs of the adhesive . I've found the usually a makers recommendation rarely matches the actual usage as they are always using much less on a perfectly flat non absorbent floor.
Consequently they ran out of the seven pack they'd got . The fools then tried to use Evostick laminate spirit based glue ( SP?) for the rest , I made them stop whilst I went on a 34 mile round trip to Swansea to " Floors to go " to get three more lungs of proper water proof flooring adhesive & made them redo the evostuck part . Almost 15 yrs on most of the floor is still well stuck but the area they attempted to use the Evostick on is not it creaks as you walk over it. BTDS!

It is telling , there was only a 2/3 lung of the rubberized flooring adhesive left out of the three extra ones I went & got.

Hello, for reasons better known to SWMBO, we are redecorating. Don't ask me why, the present paper has only been up for 40 years and I never look at the walls.

Question: are there any decent places to buy wallpaper? There used to be specialist shops that lent books of patterns. Am I stuck with B&Q, Homebase and the likes?

Just tell her what you've got is a William Morris design & is now back in vogue, problem solved

Worse thing about decorating is letting someone else do it and having to sort out the **Language** ups, in the old place the Mrs Blobber and eldest daughter wanted to paint daughters bedroom, they "found" some paint in the paint stash but couldnt get a nice finish on the walls, turned out they used a nice oil based gloss!! took ages for it to go off before I could do anything with it!

When I bought the house in 1980 it was woodchip everywhere. The problem was that they had painted the walls a very dark colour but without moving any of the shelving or radiators or sideboards. Naked woodchip plus dark paint. It had to go. A lot of plaster came off with the woodchip. I had a £30k mortgage at 17% interest (yes, 17%) so money was tight. I lashed up the walls the best I could and re-papered.

This time I'm paying someone to do it. SWMBO has been on about it for the 20 years, I've finally succumbed. And I bet it won't improve my sex life!

house I grew up in I remember my dad repapering the hall, in one spot the paper ran from ground floor level up between the stairs and right to the roof.... a full roll of wallpaper was only just long enough!

I was only a kid then so probably wasn't told how he felt about that one bit.


but I remember how happy he was when he found the 100 year old dado rails were set at just the right hight so he could run the wall paper sideways instead of having to cut it... he'd apply paste to the wall and unroll it as he went along :-)

Suddenly the four inch brush or a sheepskin on a 12 " roller , on a 12 foot light weight extendable carbon fibre pole looks very attractive .

I can only manage the vinyl stuff you put on an internal feature wall or in an alcove.

To be honest why anybody would wallpaper/artex is beyond belief. Fashion I would think....

We've got woodchip in living room/ staircase and landing.

It'll no doubt take half the plaster with it so I've been putting it off for last 17 years..

Can see the benefit of a nice smooth plastered wall.
