Wall chaser i sold mine

I sold my wall chaser a while ago now I need to do a couple sockets


Yes it can cut it with angle grinder but I don't want the mess any ideas on how to do it with angle grinder with little mess

I have looked and to higher one it's 50 plus the vat inc blades it's only 100 to buy one

Where do they get there prices from

I found the same with hire shops, all blood relatives of Dick Turpin.

Anyway, diamond blade in a grinder and get a helper to hold a workshop vacuum on the exit side of the blade. Not perfect but gets 90% of it.

I bought the one below a few weeks ago for about £100, it’s a gem. Vacuum won’t even come close to keeping the dust down, it’s a full all in one hooded paper overall job with a full face mask, also need plenty of light. Perfect gadget if you don’t want to knock shaky old walls about.

When stating your 'buy' price, are you basing it on the same make/brand/machine offered by the hire shop or a generic Chinese machine?

I had a 4 inch angle grinder with long blade extension to put 2 blades on an inch apart , taped the vacuum tube close to the dust cloud .

To be really posh use a big screw top tub half filled with water pipe to vacuum sealed u=in the top and the pipe to the grinder also in at th top by=ut well into the water , slip a green scotch bright in the vacuum tube end to reduce splashes getting sucked in the vacuum . After each cut change the water , run the cutter along a baton screwed to the wall . Use 1.5 ribbed aquarium filter piping for the hoses .

A few years later 2006 I got one , either Llidl or Aldi on line had wall chasers in their online tool shop mine was circa £24 with two blades . We totally rewired the bungalow with 24 double switched sockets , lowered the light switches to 110mm from the floor etc. etc. Made another wet filter .... not much mess .. sold it for £60 at a boot sale a few months later

So many blades will create a lot of dust. Can you make a spacer and leave out the middle ones then " pop " chisel the channel out with an SDS spoon bit or other chisel .

Exactly My wall chaser and dust extractor was £800 odd.

If it’s just a couple of sockets, why don’t you do it by hand. Hammer and chisel, scutch hammer or chisel on a sds. Probably quicker than clearing up all the mess using an angle grinder.

As mentioned, the hire machines will be branded, and a lot more expensive than the cheap and cheerful ones you are looking at for £100.
Plus the blades are a ton a set, and they need to allow for how much wear will be put on them.
Nobody looks after hire equipment, so its going to get absolutely wrecked and they need to factor in maintenance and replacement costs.
Plus the normal overheads of running a business, and the ever increasing wedge going to Rachel in accounts. It all adds up.

Turn it around, and look at it that you have the advantage of being able to purchase cheap but largely functional Chinese machinery quite easily. Imagine the true costs otherwise.

i agree on they got to make a proffit i go to work to make money they do the same and yes the item im hire is prob more expensive but the shortest time i can hire for is 1 day its 4 cuts i can do in an hour so half a day would do

the small hire place near me does stuff for 1 hour ,2 ,4 a day but does not do the chaser in there


i have thought about jusy knocking it out but its on the nextdoors wall so want to make as little noise as poss but i might just cut using a angle grinder do 1 cut at a timne and get other half to hold the hoover near where its needed and knock out the last bits

be some cheap thing the hire shops will be branded top quality .i have metabo a twin diamond chaser and it cost me over 200 quid that was 20 years ago probably only ever used it on a couple of rewires and a concrete floor to put conduits in to benches in the middle of a couple of class rooms

Just give them a heads up & tell them you'll be making a bit of noise for a hour or two, if you're concerned about noise.

it will be a cavity wall between so whats the problem get it knocked out , as long as its not on a sunday morning early like i did rewiring an empty street house and a big fat mong with tatts with no top on came in and said shut the f xxxx up my mate said i just let him get it off his chest if he didnt go my mate said he would have chinned him as he is a real handy guy

Just give them a heads up & tell them you'll be making a bit of noise for a hour or two, if you're concerned about noise.

I live in a semi and if I or my neighbour are having any noisy work done we will let each other know.

any recommend a decent wall chaser?

full re-wire to do here next year, it's all prehistoric, looks like it had new fuse boxes in the 70's but same old cables, there's 3 fuse boxes, think 12 circuits into each... I'll probably swap to a radial circuit for each room, so plenty to go in

old school lath and plaster, all internal walls are brick and I'll have to take some out of them too

don;t mind spending a few quid, but don;t want to go silly

Do you get nice straight lines? Decent edges etc. ?

I'd have thought they would make a real mess of the wall
