I've seen this quoted many times amongst converters, particularly businesses doing transporters, they're still getting the vans re-designated as motor caravans with just the pop top but they really have to look the part now. DIY conversions may have to work a bit harder.Yes, has been the case for about 4 or 5 years now. Note that this is just DVLA's take on things of what they want to see to put 'motor caravan' on the V5 - it isn't law. No matter what the DVLA body type, if it fits the definition in my post above, then it's a Motor caravan and not subject to the reduced speed limits.
I might look into making my T4 a camper if I can then, but not if I have to fit a pop top as its a low budget thingDiscussed many times on T6 forum. The VOSA designation is what counts not DVLA interpretation. A mattress and a stove in the back of a van doesn’t make it a camper but a decent conversion does even if the log book says N1.
