I got my steel today. It was delayed due to someone putting my order in the wrong pile - the perils of not being a megabucks customer, I suppose. After degreasing it (it looked as though it'd been dipped in engine oil) I had a go at welding it:
I think I did ok. The lumpyness is probably due to my unsteady hand - I was surprised by the ferocity of the buzz. I set my welder up with the help of the site's calculator. The only problem I had was I kept melting the wire to the tip, and I damaged the swan neck getting the last damaged tip out . In hindsight, I think 0.6 wire was too thin for the beefy metal, but it was what I had.
