That beats the 18 or 20mm of my MT3 spindle! Even so, its very useful. My er40 is about 100mm from spindle face to the nut allowing slightly longer parts.

Lathes.co.uk says 3/4" for a standard Boxford spindle. With 3C coolets and drawbar I guess you'd get maybe 16mm through? So the ER40 (or even ER32) would be better in that respect.

To make a collet block? I can do you some 50mm square steel bar if that would be better.
Thanks - that's very kind - but no - this whole thing started as I just need to hold 5mm silver steel securely in the lathe - and it was pointed out to me I can do that easily by making up a collet for gripping in the 3 jaw with a piece of 20mm aluminium suitably drilled and turned with a slit in one side.
So I'm going to sit back, have a go at that, and if it fails revert to the collet route.

Where did the 20mm come from? A 20mm diameter piece with a 5mm hole in it, even if slit, might take a bit of squeeze to close it. A considerably thinner wall will better help with the collet-action.
20mm was probably a random figure (My issue was the 5mm was slipping in the 3 jaw - so 20mm would give plenty to hang on to) - but you're right - if it doesn't grip well, I could reduce the diameter.
That's a good way of holding small round stuff , I do that when I want to turn the end of drill bits to clean them up / reduce shank them.
