I restored an XJS a little while ago. Lots of work but very pleased in the end.
Some of the usual rust spots are highlighted in my restoration thread. Pardon some of the not so good welding.
Here it is.

He said the 4.0 parm, is that the old 3.8 bored out ?

The earlier ones were 3.6L not sure what they did to increase the capacity. A mates got a 3.6l cabriolet with a manual gearbox and only 50k, probably the ultimate XJS.
some was a V12 5.3 also a 3.4 inline 6 was used not sure on other engines maybe 4.2 as well
Wanton jag cruelty![]()
The earliest jag straight six engine known as XK came in 2.8, 3;.4 3.8 and 4.2 commonly and were fitted in all the early jags up to the XJ6 series 3.
The 3.6 and 4,0 was a completely new engine fitted in the XJS and XJ40, XJ6. Known as the AJ6. it was later improved to become the AJ16.
The 12 cylinder 5.3 and sometimes 6.0 has always been essentially the same since inception variations in carbs, fuel injection, HE (fireball) heads. A beautiful bit of kit, eerily silent inside the cab, in fact jaguar had to fit an inhibitor as owners were burning out starter motors trying to start the car when it was running.
