I bought one several years ago when I got a D3, really useful bit of kit and still have it.For £4k I'd steer clear of an L322. I think you're only going to get a dog of one at that price. I'd say there's nothing comparable to them, especially in V8 form. But the V8s are going to set you back £500 in road tax. You should also budget on buying an IID tool (£300ish if I recall) because it'll save you that in diagnostics.
So that leaves you about £3k to buy a vehicle. You'll do a lot of hunting to find a decent one for that.
I've just bought one (well back in March I think it was) a 4.4TDV8 (2011) with 125k on it, full JLR service history and had just had new tyres and full service before I bought it. Was £12.5k and that was a good price.
If you pay bottom dollar for an L322 you'll be spending your time chasing faults and hate the experience. Well worth paying a bit extra.
Don't be put off by high mileage but it must have been serviced and looked after.
Also used it on my BIL L322 TD6 and FIL L322 TDV8 (after buying additional licences)
But, recently bought an Autel for 1 job only, needed to code a new key fob for my BIL's FL2, IID tool can't do it and its not on their road map yet
Following a review on the FL2 forum I bought the Autel for £45 and a new key fob for £30 and coded it to the car. It is now also unlocked to all LR's whereas the IID tool its VIN locked and you need to buy a new licence for additional vehicles, worth exploring
