How would that help mate. You could try some "soft" jaws in your 3 jaw chuck .

Yes just holding it in the normal jaws. You bore them out to the size you want .
I am assuming you were useing normal hard jaws in the first place .
Would they need to be bought??A set of 'myford compatible' soft jaws is likely to cost more than the job is worth...
They could be made, but you'd have to cut the threads in the back to mount them in the chuck if you don't have split jaws.
Well we are back on to Monday school day now but next Friday evening I'll be fitting my 4 jaw and mercer clock that mattH ever so kindly donated and having a crack at work piece movement.
This is quite important for me to learn as I've been given some weldable fittings to make and although it's not a huge paying job I've taken it with open arms just to justify the lathes position (lazy sod hasn't made me a penny yet). Some of these fittings are tank tops some just simple push on for hoses and I think a little work piece manipulation might be done along the way.
It's a good job I haven't been given the go ahead yet as I've still got some learning to do. I was making a practice piece when I stumbled on this little problem. It's a bloody good job I've got me threads nailed now as I'll be needing to use that too. By the time I'm done I might of just broke minimum wage bracket lol. I'm certainly no speedster on the thing but enjoyment is more important and although the welding makes much more brass for me it's no where near as fun.
id agree totally, but its a deep rabbit hole when you do go down it...But hey, anything that means you need to invest in more tools is a good thing right?
im with ya, but its possible he is on about making a set of soft sleeves to fit the hard jaws and pop them on and off as needed.I'm assuming you mean split jaws, because while you can keep soft jaws 'forever' they're either single purpose or they keep getting machined out to suit the next job, then the job after that will invariably be smaller so you'd need another set... That would require a 'spare' set of hard jaws, and the challenge of machining said hardness, then making up the split halves.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for making stuff (in this case it could be quite good - internal/external/soft/etc) but when there's a 4 jaw independent available would it be worth the time?
was it fenner, im slipping, that the test they ran on the mocked up double jaw set up, the one where tom was in it calling him out to do it.Actually @tinman123 - Fenner got the belt
ah yeah, but if im wrong, im wrong so ill admit it, pdg is right, i did refresh tho just in case...
when your as good as that mind you i wouldnt mind being in the top three there.

Pre risk assessments and method statements .
We just welded mild steel to the spare hard jaws then machined to suit .
Never saw a set of these fail ,
can happen . a lot of people don't put twist drills well in the chuck and knacker the endI have a bell-mouthed Pratt chuck here too and I was surprised to find that it was the chuck at fault and the jaws were perfect. I had previously assumed that knackered chucks would be down to the jaws wearing but I later bought a similar 3-jaw that was missing the inside jaws, so I tried the jaws from the knackered chuck and found them to fit and grip really nicely. The only thing I can attribute it to is someone overloading the original chuck with something gripped right on the jaw tips and stretching the jaw guides or something like that.
i wasnt taking any offense at all hi.Wasn't aimed at you. If you watch Keith Fenner, in his later videos he keeps accidentally leaving the 4 jaw shoot out "belt" in shot
"Just sayin'...." Was his catchphrase. For about a week LOL. I think they all rate Abom as the one to beat.
true, if you were hopin to just back off two jaws each time but even so id still dial it up again. That type of 'soft' jaw wouldn't help with repeatability with flipping the work, only with potential damage...
