I should add ghollan, that copper tip is where the welding wire is connected to the welder for power i.e. if you have the wrong size tip you will have a poor electrical connection, this would explain why you are so far out with the settings. When you weld is it a little erratic and difficult to control? (although my welding still can be even with the correct tip!)

IIRC the hole in the tip should only be 0.008mm to 0.01mm larger than the wire?

Just went to the Garage and checked that. The contact tip has 0.8 stamped on it. I didn't know that there were different sizes. Do you think that might be causing my problem or does the tip size make much of a difference.

id get the correct tip for the wire it transfers the power to the wire to enable it to weld

Absolutely, get a 0.6mm tip (or some 0.8mm wire) and try the weld again, you should find you can weld 1mm sheet at the lowest setting with the main problem being avoiding distortion and not blowing holes. You can pick up packs of tips for not much money and I am sure you will see a big improvement in the situation

Whilst you are at it, make sure you have the feed rollers set up for 0.6mm as well (they should have 2 grooves, one will be 0.8mm but I do not know what size the other will be 1mm or 0.6mm)

Thanks for your help guys. Are these tips fairly standard across all welding torches. The torch on my welder is a Pratix mig15.

no, some torches have different threads and lengths and so on. I think your torch equates to an mb15 euro torch, for which you can get spares on weld equip, but i would ask him first before buying incase i am wrong

As Snooper said, Will take the tip in to the local supplier and hopefully they will have something.
