yes i did but didnt take into account the tpo reference just that they was planting on the boundary area near the main road just as planting trees on boundarys to others propertys

And strictly go against the recommended species of the tree officer. That would be scandalous. Ash is prone to disease and not a recommended to plant anymore.

or that council tpo isnt fit for purpose if its protecting ash trees then ash trees should be replanted not another type of tree

Ash are in decline Gaz, Hymonscyphus fraxineus has wiped out a lot of Ash in this country and doesn't look like it will be going away any time soon. Far better if given the choice to plant an alternative.

A bit parochial, but there are loads of ash along the River Tees at Yarm. Willow is prevalent there, obs. But plenty of healthy ash. Pretty young, but healthy trees. Not suffering in this neck of the woods.

Bear in mind that Ash grows like stink, I’m not sure about the others. I planted a tiny ash cutting about 5 years back thinking it might be nice and it’s getting on for 20 feet tall now.

Handy if you're planning on building your own Morgan.

Whether you think the tree officer is wrong or TPO is wrong is pretty immaterial. He’s in the job and that’s what he’s said.

There are plenty of healthy specimens about but the general consensus is dieback will get them at some point, the only glimmer of hope is some are showing a natural resilience to the pathogen. Time will tell, meantime it would make more sense for gsr to plant an alternative and not waste the growing time.

If the ash dieback isn’t going away any time soon what’s the point of replacing an ash tree with one that’s going to require replacement again?

That’s more expense and so forth

I would imagine the tree officer has recommended alternatives for that reason.

Personally I think trees should be compulsory, along with proper maintenance. Good for the environment and pleasant to live with

True and even more so in @GSR `s case because the TPO`s that were in place for the original trees will probably move onto the replacements, anything other than duty of care works will require permission from the TO.

Birch just keeps on giving, seeds block the gutters and little twigs all over the place in Autumn. Hornbeam is nice and dense and pretty fast growing. Ash is a pain dropping keys and shooting saplings up anywhere you don't want it. A nice Rowan tree with red berries for the dicky birds is always one of my favourites.

You don't need to, they just start to look like a tree after about forty years and they fall over. A while back we took out a load of marked trees and there was one Silver birch in the mix that should have stayed. Cost the arb consultant £6k by the time he found a replacement, brought in with the tree spades, planted/staked/roped it down and paid for the aftercare. Kin Birch

Makes good firewood.

Willow and birch are often not trees to show how good at felling you are.

Yes, ours could do with a bit of reducing, they may end up a bit like my hair, ie very thin up top…

Birch support more species of insect than virtually any other tree. As a consequence they provide food for birds particularly in nesting season. They allow lots of light through with benefits to the forest floor.
"Weeds" are a vital part of the natural world.
