If anybody has any advice or experience of which trees to plant I would be grateful to hear your thoughts.

Last year I had 2 ash trees taken down that were subject to a TPO.

Ive been given the following choice of species as replacement trees:
field maple
hornbeam
silver birch

Is there any obvious preference of the above? Ideally looking for something that’s a slow grower and won’t need cutting regularly, also if it doesn’t drop lots of fruit/flowers it would be good.

They are on my boundary to the road and will overhang the driveway.
If they can block out a bit of traffic noise and screen the house great, but I really want the lowest maintenance trees possible - I’m definitely not green fingered.

Plant either of your intended choice - just make sure they are not in the way of any cyclists as I believe that trees also now have to give way to them....

Birds would appreciate the Hornbeam. Silver Birch is a weed

personally id love people like you to be fined for non maintenance of your trees

the fact you want them on your boundary says even more therefore you wouldnt like it if your council bill went up to clear your leaves off the pavement area

i dont see why others have to pay for you to have a tree in your garden and not clear up its leaves

same thing with your tree causing damage to others propertys and cars if they fallen damaging them you should foot the bill in my eyes

I read the OP as they are under a TPO so have to be replaced, nothing to do with him “wanting them” there

If I had my way I wouldn’t be replacing them at all - the council are insisting I replace them as they were TPO trees.

Im the one that’s footed the big bill to have the rotten and dangerous trees removed so maybe don’t come at me about non maintenance, Im the one that has stopped the rotten trees falling on pedestrians and passing cars.

Personally I’d love people like you to keep your opinions to yourself, but it’s an open forum and part of it. for every unhelpful comment such as yours there are a multitude of helpful people on here thankfully

And strictly go against the recommended species of the tree officer. That would be scandalous. Ash is prone to disease and not a recommended to plant anymore.

but im the building site side of it. seen arogant owners of land tear them out of the ground for nothing just to build houses

general query here did you get a tree survey done on the trees at all ?

mainly to prove the trees was in a dangerous situation

Bear in mind that Ash grows like stink, I’m not sure about the others. I planted a tiny ash cutting about 5 years back thinking it might be nice and it’s getting on for 20 feet tall now.

Oh yes - that was something else I had to arrange and deal with, yet should be fined in your eyes. They were approved for removal the same day as submitting the info to the council.

Ash are in decline Gaz, Hymenoscyphus fraxineus has wiped out a lot of Ash in this country and doesn't look like it will be going away any time soon. Far better if given the choice to plant an alternative.
