Unless you have B+E or “Grandfather rights”, you’re limited to;
Car or van, up to 3500kgs, plus a trailer of 750kg MAM.
Car or van, plus trailer over 750kg MAM, as long as the total train weight isn’t over 3500kg.
If you passed before 1st August 1997, your total train weight can be 8250kg.
MAM - Maximum Authorised Mass

Most modern cars have the max towing weight permittable listed on the V5 under section O.1 & O.2.
thanks , looks like I can go up to 8250kg max and have no vin . but about half that weight would be enough for me

Lots of mixed / wrong info on here.
You need to split the issue into two sections.
What YOU can drive & what the VEHICLE can tow.
First of YOU.
If you passed your test pre 01-01-1997 then you can basically drive a cat B vehicle with ANY plated weight of trailer as long as the real weight (and a few other regs too) is within the capacity of the vehicle. This also applies to people that passed the BE test pre 19-01-2013.
If YOU passed after 01-01-1997 then you are limited to a vehicle up to 3500kg towing a trailer PLATED to 750kg
OR
a Combined PLATE weight of 3500kg.
DO NOT use real weight, unladen weight, googled weight, you get the picture. Only use weights from the vehicles V5c in section F1 or the top number on the weight plate PLUS the biggest number on the trailers weight plate.
EVEN IF BOTH ARE EMPTY. The TOTAL must be 3500kg or less.
Even 1kg over make you illegal.
Then you get on to the VEHICLE.
If the vehicles weight plate does not have a GTW then you can not tow anything behind it.
If sections O1 & O2 are blank that does not matter as they are makers recommendations only.
The GTW is based on REAL weights as loaded at the time of use.

Your car will not have a 1500kg MAM & if it did I doubt it would be rated to tow 1500kg never mind plus load.

I never noticed that before - my 2007 Alfa has a figure there 100kg greater than the chassis plate
And as DVLA can't fill in the model name as they have no EC number to do so for my Dodge Challenger, there's nothing in that box . . .or on the US VIN sticker . . .

Your Dodge can not tow in the UK.
its a Beauford kit and has no weights in log book , originally registered and inspected with the chassis and engine nos then issued with a number plate and mot , it was supplyed with a tow bar, registered before sva came in , I have been towing about half ton now and again , built about 1992

If you take the car to a (council ?) weigh bridge then for a small fee they will confirm weight.

Quick search shows a Beauford, I assume built on Cortina components and Pinto engine, is approx 1000kg / 2200lb / just under 1 ton.
For what purpose?
That will only show unladen weights.
Not MAM or GTW which is what is needed.
Full car licence passed when?
The HVG3 (now C) does not give towing capacity (normally) beyond 750kg.

However any tow capacity would have to keep the car & trailers weight within the cars stated MAM.
In your position I would either use the services of SVTECH to get it registered for towing legally.
OR
Do lots of research on other vehicles that are the same & then have a plate made showing a sensible GTW.

you're wrong on that bit... there was a big discussion about it on the forum transit forum, someone there emailed back and forth with VOSA and posted the replies up for everyone to see
car and trailer both need to be under their individual max weight
car weight plus trailer weight need to be under the cars train weight
and unless you have the license for it (probably not) the car needs to be heavier than the trailer

Been through it before, even posts a copy of the transcript and letters others have received from DVLA/DVSA and apparently it’s them that are wrong..
