Trailer lashing points

Very slightly off topic, on my boat trailer I have some heavy duty D rings bolted to chassis. To these I attach ratchet straps with hooks. Am I doing right or should the strap be attached to the D ring in some other way? My little boat is only 300kg but I’m using 5 ton rated straps and D rings. Maybe that hook is a weak link?

If the strap is a good quality the hook will never break the strap will snap a long time before the hook. For a 300kg boat 5000kg straps are well over kill if it's strapped correctly. A badly strapped load will break any strap, been there in the middle of the night sorting out those type of problems.

How heavy is the boat? Hooks through D rings should be fine, that’s all I’ve ever used at home and professionally.

I use those webbing protectors where the strap is in contact with the hull. Sounds like it’ll be fine.

Only a 1500kg trailer, max payload is only 1120kg.

I am wondering if there is, or if there should be, any connection between the trailer GW and the rating of the lashing points?

I would think the numbers given by the manufacturer are for how much pull you can apply to the lashing point with your strap/chain binder/bungee cord rather than the overall weight that the lashing point can be used to secure. Is that reasonable?

I think the ones with the clip are more so they do not fall off the D-ring in an unloaded condition and either be lost or dropped.

When they have load on them, it is very difficult for one to come off. Only if the diameter of the metal from which the D is made is too big for the throat of the hook on the strap would you have issues, and that is down to competence.
