I never knew that, and to say i have few cars with tow bars electrics fitted. and one didnt work at all and the now van is wired so the plug needs to be plugged in upside down. I had to cut out another notch for the plug to go in. couldnt be bothered to rewire it.

As far as I know it’s the 13 pins at the moment but 7 will be tested soon or that’s the plan. Anything over class 4 as well as HGV they’re all tested. What I was told, @premmington will know best I’d think

This Is very true, paras round here seem to become tree cutters must be a natural progression

Same true in Suffolk / Norfolk. Most end up as utility arb from the ones I’ve met

13 pin plugs only tested even if vehicle is a Class 4, 5 or 7

Anything over Class 7 (but not to include Class 7) - are not tested - socket wise only at the trailer lights.

It is also a mess testing 13 pin sockets - even if they fail - they pass!

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is aware of the ongoing issues with the operation of some 13-pin socket test tools. Its continuing to work with The Garage Equipment Association (GEA) to resolve them.

ExampleYour test tool may continually flicker when plugged into the socket of a vehicle that uses controller area network bus (CANbus) systems.

This may not be a fault with your socket tester, it generally indicates that there’s continuity at each pin on the vehicle’s socket. When the lamps are operated in turn you will usually see that that individual LED will function correctly.

You must continue to test 13-pin sockets. If the example provided happens, and the self-test facility on your tester does not show any faults, then you should pass the socket test.

The MOT testers at my work got caught out on that.
But due to them not even testing 13pin sockets, as when somebody asked if they'd had any problems, most replied no, and one asked where the tester was as he never even knew we had one

Cheers I always thought they did the electric suzies on tractor units but maybe not!

That sounds like a usual raffle of red tape you get from a government department!!

3 A trailer electrical socket: a. (i) insecure. Minor (ii) insecure and likely to become detached. Major b. (i) damaged or deteriorated. Minor (ii) damaged or deteriorated to the extent that the connecting lead cannot be securely connected.


They are two busy looking at reflective marking tape and spray supression to worry about the lighting socket.

When you drag a trailer thru - the lights have gotta work at the back thats all.

That’s pretty fair! The amount of retro reflective I’ve put on is crazy considering there wasn’t much wrong with what came off! I thought it was a quirk of the bloke here, didn’t realise they were all fixated on the stuff.

No they are all obsessed with it...

To be honest - I think it is good idea - if you don't have to go overboard with it.

I have nothing against trailer marker lights - or reflective markers.

We live in a dayglo high viz world now - lorries were never gonna escape!

Made the dash panel today out of some 3mm ali, took a while to get sort the layout. Need to order four switches and then its time to wire it all up.
