That's reminded me, my mother has a petrol strimmer in her shed that one of the foster kids managed to break in some way, he said the pull cord snapped, but I cant get the engine to turn at all so think he seized it then tried to pull it over and yanked the cord out...now ive got a decent lathe I make take it apart and if it's a damaged piston or bore like I suspect I would t mind having g a go at boring/honing it a bit oversize and making a new piston for it. If it's not repairable it will just become some obscure art piece

I bought a spares or repairs TIG welder some months back. AC DC one. £68 on ebay. It needed the HF points cleaning and arcing removed from plastic parts. Got it working again but it sat in the spare bedroom unused as I have another AC DC tig I use instead. So I sold it today for £400 locally. I am not counting that towards the Stihl BR800 I want that to be the start of how much it can be traded up for

I enjoy restoring engines, pumps etc. but once finished I may take it to a couple of shows before it just takes up space so I sell it (at a loss)

the fun is definetly getting a non runner, running, then they just take up room...... I have a selection that have not seen daylight for a few years now but I wont be selling them on any time soon.

Kinda same here but it comes a day you have to sell donate something to get something better or just free up space

Thats a bit odd considering a lot of the crap sold on here. Its also an essential tool for clearing up an outside welding and grinding area. I got my Stihl 020T on here and that has been excellent...

I dont often sell anything on here but if thats the rule - which isnt written in the actual rules, then I wont bother to list anything on here.

Problem with 2 strokes engines is that are very user susceptible.
You can sell a brand new item too if the buyer puts straight gasoline or just the wrong mix they can destroy it in seconds
So it starts a debate and essentially problems for everyone
I can understand the moderators point about

No more than any other tool, they can all be ruined in seconds by incompetence. 2T's are tolerant to a wide range of mixtures 25:1 - 50:1.

Getting back on the topic of the original theme of the post, yes I’d be interested to see the progress on a series of trading up repair deals.

I’d happily join in with some projects of my own, but I tend to do these things in fits and starts so updates would be quite intermittent.

I’ll try and be disciplined and keep proper records on my next one and see where it takes me!

id be happy to join in with the fixer upper things i do, but im terrible for forgetting to document things and usually only remember to take a photo once its finished which isnt much use for a thread like this

So after more research I have determined the following:

Somehow the bronze bushing in the small end of the conrod is totally awol. It was a solid bushing on these, not needle bearings. The con rod is OK but the piston pin is toast but thats OK as the new piston comes with the pin. The bushings are not available as a spare part.

So basically, I need to get a bronze bushing made, get a new piston w/ pin and gear. Not major and should still end up less than £50 in parts.

I have this small hone coming so I can really clean up and de glaze the original cylinder

Every single one of those Briggs and Stratton engines I've encountered myself ended up throwing a rod opening a big window in the crankcase.
The dumbest design ever using a cast iron con rod

All BR engines had solid bushings Stihl determined it required. Alot of them also seized due to being too tight! But anyway it needs to stay solid bushing particularly as I am selling it on too I cant take chances

Well all I can say is you’ve been unlucky then. Or maybe I’ve just been lucky!

Every single B&S engine I’ve had the pleasure of trading up has been a little jem that’s only taken very minor fettling to get running sweetly!
