This thread is just for fun for anyone taking on spares or repairs items and seeing how you get on. Did the purchase end up being a good idea and easy fix or does it go a bit pear shaped and the next one goes better.
Rules:
ONLY for tools and garage equipment. No cars or other items please. We are taking a few hundred quid here not thousands sort of thing.
Post the spares or repairs item purchase price. Then qoute yourself as you go forward with the cost of replacement parts or materials through to resale or if you want to keep it- what you end up saving VS new price. (I do this alot hence my garage is bulging at the sides)
This is to be a light / fun conversation thread. Please do not go off on a tangent about HMRC etc. That's the individuals business and up to them to keep themselves right.
Finally what I am personally interested in is what I - or others may be able to trade up to. For example if I can start with something small can I end up treating myself to a large tool or tool cab that sort of thing. And know that with a few repairs you can end up with something you wanted without breaking the bank.

My start today:
Stihl BR800 FB locally. £180. Engine tight as a fiddle wont pull over.
I already have a good BR800 so this is one ill have a go and repairing, test its all 100% then reseller for the next item and so forth.
Ill take a look later at how bad it is.
If I can repair it then a good used one BR800 is worth £550+

I would be interested in stuff like this. I used to buy all sorts of petrol strimmers that people thought were dead because they couldn't get them started and usually it was just a case of new plug, fresh fuel and a clean air filter then stick it on ebay for a few quid to cover the parts I'd bought but then I found it wasn't worth it as people started wanting more and more for the crap stuff and wanted to pay less and less for the fixed stuff

Not sure - it was a pro gardener owned it so he shouldn't have missed the oil.
A new engine or crankshaft is £400 ish. Not good.
However, I believe the cylinder will clean up as the scores are really just light transfer marks. Nothing terrible. Golf pistons are available £20. But I need to clean the crankshaft and check if the small end is supposed to have a bushing and if they can be got because the small end feels way too lose. Whole crankshaft aftermarket with piston is £104 worst case.

Metabo WEA24-230MVT Quick
Paid 50 euro+ shipping for it (total in the picture), sold as untested so spares and repairs
Showed up home in pristine conditions
I've bet it was just the plug, so I've cut it and replace (5 euro) started perfectly.
Now I've had to seek for the missing bits so I've ordered the guard from metabo (60 euro) and a quick release nut on Amazon, I went with an original Bosch SDS click and paid 20 euro for it .
Grand total of 170 euro roughly.
Decided to keep it in the same moment I've bought it so no income from it but saved around 200 euro if I've had to buy it brand new as its price is around 350 and 400 euro
That's my favorite bargain.

I do this but for small cheaper items, mostly pulled from skips. I'm happy if any direct costs are covered, postage, packing materials, occasional spare parts.
The bit that kills it for me is shifting on the repaired items. I have to avoid stuff I can't post most of the time. If I could find a way of posting upright vacuum cleaners I'd be as rich as Creosote.

Worked straight away but I've replaced a blown capacitor and bought a chuck for
40 euro
Restored it
Let's say a total of about 150 160 euro
Saved a bunch of money if buying it brand new especially from a physical retailer in my area

It is how I live my life and fill the workshop. Buy up spares or repair items that I couldn't afford otherwise. Battery tools are a favourite because it's typically not a tool problem but a dead cell. One memorable one was a brilliant spot welder fro next to nothing. Stripped, cleaned, worked.
But take that spot welder. It stopped working just when I needed it! I guess I can fix it again but it's a chore when you really want to get on with a job and the tool you need is unreliable.
Been doing that so long now, virtually my entire workshop is stuffed full of slightly broken tools!
I will update with facts and figures but after this next cuppatea, I will be taking a £40 slightly broken strimmer next door to do £50 quids worth of gardening....

My agony, Husqvarna K770 consaw
Paid 150+shipping from France
It arrived with a destroyed top end
Completely disassembled
Cleaned and replaced the top end (50ish euro) reassembled
New diaphragms and rebuild the carb (20 ish)
Didn't work due to the intake plate on the cylinder meant for older models.
Bought severals here and there for a total of 50 euro
None worked
So plan B, decided to hone the original cylinder, I think I've paid 15 euro for an honing tool on Amazon, anyways I've managed to save it .
Here comes another problem while running everything was fine but once stopped, fuel started to pour everywhere Wich is a nightmare especially when you know the engine is still hot.
Fortunately nothing happened but other 30 euro thrown in the trash for a replacement carburetor on Amazon which didn't work.
So I've somehow managed to repair the original one, had to replace the needle valve and clean the seat using a drill.
Worked fine
I've then bought a Blade for it on Amazon for 60 euro i think
Maintenance kit (filters, plug, and belt) other 40 euro shipped and taxed from UK.
Ran fine tuned wrong, discovered while digging the mechanics pit.
It bogs down while cutting.
Anyways made a video of it too, actually I have made a mini series about but condensed all it one video
So we have a total loss of about 500 euro
It works but not perfectly fine yet
I'll never sell it for a reasonable price and have an income from it
It's about 1500+vat brand new but I didn't save 1000 euro buying it, I've just lost 500, that's the truth

Restored and became my most successful video yet.
Honestly not even worth because no one would buy it for an high enough price to cover the total 575 euro I've ditched in it.
But it has been a great satisfaction both because of the YouTube results and because I've really saved it.
Plus I've always wanted this specific make and model

I bought a spares or repairs TIG welder some months back. AC DC one. £68 on ebay. It needed the HF points cleaning and arcing removed from plastic parts. Got it working again but it sat in the spare bedroom unused as I have another AC DC tig I use instead. So I sold it today for £400 locally. I am not counting that towards the Stihl BR800 I want that to be the start of how much it can be traded up for
