I have half a story from a FB page that you can buy a small tracker ‘chip’ that can be tracked using an I phone. It’s an outright purchase and folks use them for pets, bits of kit etc.
Anyone a clue who it is made by?

Beal do one for 40+vat that you just add a sim card to. It txts with gps coords on request I think.

If you have a giffgsff SIM in it, and use giffgsff in yr mobile, it'll be free to run - you have to top up every three months for free txts to/from other giffgsff phones - think it's £5 minimum.

The one that’s been advertised on FB that is about the size of a 10 pence coin. Can’t remember the name, sorry. I use a personal tracker for work. It’s a spot tracker, works really well. Wouldn’t do for a pet or be easily hidden. We did an exercise to see how quickly we could find one hidden out on the forest. Less than an hour and we had it found.

They sync via Bluetooth to your phone and alert you when your out of range or last known position,
It's only a tracker if you sign up and it can use other users location so you can find your lost items.

Online auction sell them for a couple of quid

The bluetooth trackers aren't proper trackers. They rely on you, or someone like you being within bluetooth range. Hardly reliable or scalable.

We have a tracker for the dog but it is not a one off payment, there is a yearly subscription.
We have had a few different ones over the years but the best so far is the Tractive2 as it has proved, so far, to be totally sea water proof
It costs £55 a year for the premium service or £90 for 2 years.

It tracks in standby every so often (15mins maybe) but you can also switch on to live tracking which lasts for 10mins and updates position every second. When the 10mins is up you can restart immediately is required.

I always see that advertised between "You won't believe what he found upstairs!" and "These 10 Hollywood stars are secretly bees!" so I'm very skeptical of it being real.

The previous one, the original Tractive was about the same length but was square, so physically quite a bit bigger.

Well it seems it does have a sim but it is definitely not a normal sim as I have seen inside them and there is just circuitry.
