I had the problem with that in the past, couldn't loosen the wheel afterwards - I don't use that crowd any more . My current tyre chap does it properly .

I bought this one for when I remove the wheels myself, either for work/repairs or cleaning the alloys and under the wheel arches. It's my OCDishness, you see.....

tell Halfords that. I couldn't remove my wheelnuts after only a week after they fitted new tires and hadn't cleaned the beads properly and they leaked

they will be sorry when they snap a customers stud

I've just picked up a torque wrench off eBay, never having owned one before. Here it is

It's a 1/2" drive Britool EVTR3000 job [big and heavy! ] with a 70-330 Nm range - got it for just over £7, it cost more in carriage . Missing the plastic knob on the end but I've a replacement ordered and on its way from China

My question is.....having given it a clean-up, what if anything would be best to lubricate it with [settle down at the back ]? I have sewing machine oil, ordinary oil, WD-40, dry graphic powder and the usual greases etc..

Certainly a bargain, I have 3 Britools in my collection staring from 6lbft all the way upto the one you've just purchased albeit as Wedgie1e (we were in dialogue some months ago about rebuilding of his) points out not the ratchet version. I had to purchase a Sealey 350 lbft ratchet adapter to achieve that function. Cost me over £300 for the three.
I've never had to lubricate any of mine other than the thread which compresses the spring. I do however unload the wrench to decompress the spring after every use.
The only thing against torque wrenches is they do rely on the the thread being "dry", some people say the only truly accurate method is overall stretch measurement of the bolt.

Hmmm, not always, but I like everything to be in it's place and 'neat'. That's why I added the 'ishness' in my post, it's not full-blown [yet ]. Oddly, I don't do much hoovering, dusting etc in the house although it's by no means a tip.

that britool is a steal at that price.

i actually have a torque wrench calibration unit here, iirc i checked one or two fo the wrenches and they were correct.
they arent something id use all the time but i do use them if i have a torque to work to.
i have a king tony precision 3/8 one, a beta 3/8 one, a 1/2 beta and a 4' long britool one as well, the numbers go high on it.
a broad enough selection to do me anyways.

I've hit on the idea of taking it to me tyre-fitter when I'm in his town next and asking if we can do a comparison between his and mine.

If he sets his to 110nm [which is 10nm below the required torque for my wheels] and I set mine to 120nm it should 'click' in short order. Is that correct thinking?

it ill give you an indication as long as his is right...

it will be the best, dont worry, its going to be plenty good for what you want it for.
and id say you will find its not far out if at all.
good sign to see it wound down when you got it.

Aye, I got it back together eventually... I had to weld a drill bit onto a length of rod to open the bore out for the ball-end of the tommy bar; turned up a replacement knob as that had gone AWOL too... but it works again! Compared it to one of the EVT3000s and it's a handful of pounds-foot out across the board, probably needs another washer to preload the spring.
I also have a 5-40 lb.ft. Norbar, a Stahlwille and an Aldi special

They say the old wheel tappers from the days of steam actually had as good or better Tollerance








Turbine bolts in power stations are cooled in dry ice before the nuts are set. Get it wrong and they pop! I know tapping has been employed in the past although it's not common and bolts have been overtightened with high grade torque wrenches
When I say pop! I mean it skywards at great speed with lives at stake and a very expensive bit of machinery down below

There is quite a bit of science in the tightening / torquing of threaded fixings, there are speacilist companies who do nothing else. Obviously not little stuff.

A company called hydratight for example.

In the smaller side of things i use a 1/4 and 3/8 torque wrench quite often saves helicoiling motorcycle engine parts

what I've found with them, is finding the feel for the click, and being smooth /consistent. addjunkie, old jap bikes, you definitely need them....

i have 2 torque wrenches too a big one for 50 up to 300 and a little 1/4 for small stuff,

u should torque up ya car wheel nuts really

I'll see your two and raise you to four......all different ranges from about 5 up to 250 ft lbs.
There has been a move away from straight torque to torque plus 45/90 degrees.......
