loads of these places just employ people for their "customer service" experience. They fail to acknowledge that customer service in weatherspoons is not really ideal for Screwfix.

Without sounding much old than i am, remember the days when often the guys in the electrical wholesalers or plumbers merchants might of been skilled men who no longer wanted or were able to work onsite and had proper knowledge and experience.
In the same way as managers had done a job for a lifetime and worked the way up knowing the job or processes inside out, rather than just a qualification at university.

Few and far between those places. there is one place near me where the guys and the young apprentice and the girl behind the counter know their stuff. I went in on one saturday and there was only one chap whose expertise wasn't in nuts and bolts and threads so he kindly left me with the run of the warehouse and told me ring the bell on the counter when I was done.

But there is another place I use when im desperate that I asked for 24mm half inch socket and he turned up with a 24mm spanner and 3/4 half inch socket and asked which I wanted.....

Halfords has to be the worse round by me. I asked if they had a towing relay for trailer indicators. The answer - "I have no idea what you're talking about". I scanned the shelves and found it.
Another time - needed a set of circlip pliers - just got a blank look. I try to avoid going in there now cos it just winds me up!

I refuse to use my local Halfools, they are terrible.
Told me when I needed a tow bar, they had to fit it as it is the law.
Told me on a Sunday morning that the Astra mk2 does not have a Alt belt as it has a timing belt.

Worse, after the Mum's car radio was stolen we could go to Halfools chooses one and take the details and they will arrange it to be fitted etc. 3 times we took the car back. This was in the late 90's
First time, it did not work when engine was running. Told it is a safety feature.
Second time, it fell out as it was not fitted correctly.
Third time it would only work when engine is running.
In the end the insurance had a local specialist fit it, no issues since.

I sent Wife into Screwfix a few weeks ago.
I gave her 2 screws and said I wanted 200 of each plus 100 3"ones.
She rings me saying the girl in the shop says do I want 3"wide or long.

Just bean related to me by my friend Jason, he was after some M6 roofing bolts, they had enough in 2 different sizes.
M6 by 40mm
M6 by 60mm

I called into one of the larger branches of Halfrauds before I ordered some red rubber grease online. Asked for some and got a blank look before being asked what it was for, told him it was for brake piston seals so he comes back with a tube of Coppaslip telling me this is what I need - muppet

I now DON'T work for them.

And thats the problem with these places generally the people asking for advise don't know that whats been recomended is incorrect because they expect the staff to be clued up.( No insult intended Sip-Free)

Mrs Robo needed a new battery for her Peugeot 308 and the local Halfrauds were competitively priced so as I was at work I told her to use their "we fit it for £10" service, after 5 minutes under the bonnet the guy gave her the £10 back and told her to go to a garage - took me about 10 minutes to fit when I got home.

Should have asked him if they had any 75mm nails instead, that would have confused him
