I'd never buy a bike from Halfords, and urge others to avoid.

I know of 4 cyclists now who have had bikes assembled by them and left the shop with them in a seriously dangerous state.

Local bike shop everytime. Miles cheaper and they know what they are doing!

I get a lot of the same type of doziness at work, it's an industrial supply warehouse but I'm not going to name it. A lot of youngish bods and most of them haven't got a clue about what they are handling. For example, the other week there was an order for some 3mm jobber drill bits, someone had mislaid part of the order so they had to repick it. They turned up with some 5mm bits and when I told them these were the wrong size, I got the reply " Send them ,they won't notice". Most of them appear to be as dumb as a box of bricks and the rest just don't give a toss.

I was a bike mechanic for them and often had to repair bikes that had been "repaired" by other branches.

Should have asked him if they had any 75mm nails instead, that would have confused him

I actually think they dont have 75mm....I think its 80mm........or that could be screws

I called into local Screwfix this morning to pick up some rolls of cable I'd ordered online (a good idea as you can jump the queue) and they asked if I'd like an Electrifix account (been meaning to get one for years) so I popped home and picked up my certificates. They had a choice of Indentures, certificates of craftsmanship, various technical qualifications and C&G certs, they decided C&G 2382 (17th edition regs) was the one that proved I was an electrician absolutely anyone can pay the money to do a 2/3 day course and sit an open book exam to get one!.

What got me was that pretty young sales assistant really didn't care when I told her that hot metal and PVC really doesn't work. Couldn't be less interested. She'll go far, doubtless.

You could write a comedy sketch about most of these, but I think a couple of chaps have already done it.

Tool Station can be as bad, but you do get free coffee.
I wanted a new male and female 115v sausage plug to repair my extension lead.

Pimply youth returned with blue and stated:
"Don't have the yellow in stock, these are direct replacements"

Blank look on his face when I pointed out the difference.
Then a look on his computer.
"Oh you mean you want the European conversion plugs."

With that I left.

But give Tool Station their due, the other outlet knew what I wanted and sorted me out. When I called Tool Station to put a work order in, I asked if I wanted to collect from out let one. I explained why not. Few days later a apology letter and a £20 voucher.

So some good did come of it.

Hi, This is mostly what gets me about this, when they mess up they give a voucher as compensation and they think it's good customer relations. I want to deal with someone who knows what they are about, not a voucher to spend in a place that doesn't know what they are doing and can't see it.

I "donated" the voucher as a Christmas present, to some one who thinks those places are fantastic.

Their tools and tool boxes are good, they can get you just about any bike you want and their special offers are good (especially online) but the rest is bottom end, overpriced rubbish.
