Sitting there at circa £25, thought I could nab it for £35-£40. A quick peek at the sellers history and looks like it could be ripe for shill bidding so I waited until the last few seconds.

I the last few seconds it went £27 - £250 - £255 - £255 which I thought was a bit odd.

Is there a bona fide reason bidding could behave like that? If there is I can't think of one.

It looks like Automatic Bids resulted in the vice selling for £255.

No I looked for that, automatic bids are greyed out. But of course you can‘t see who bid anyway.

I guess someone might have bid the £250, then someone else bid over that taking the total to £255 and as if that wasn’t enough, bid over his own bid again. Even so, I wouldn’t expect two bids from the same bidder to be together like that….

I agree with your assessment. The time sequence of the bids shown by Ebay seems somehow faulty. Why not give Ebay a note asking for an explanation?

It's a curious end. The 255 winning bid was placed some time before the, more recent, 255 bid.

What must have happened is that the winning 255 bid was the winners absolute maximum. If it were not, it would have automatically stepped up to the next bid increment, but it did not.

The identical 255 bid that was later must also have been the maximum (although I'm not as sure at this - it would have been 255-260 max) as, otherwise, it would have stepped up to 260 to overcome the 255 winner.

In the case of two identical maximums, the earlier wins.

All this is harder to see with a private auction but it's not easy to see how the other 255 bid would have been the same (winning) user.

My max bid was (or would have been) £32. I can’t believe anyone would pay £255 for that…

...but, if you @Screwdriver actually want it, I'd say keep an eye for the relisting.

I may look out for it, it did catch my fancy (I’m feeling flush after a very profitable decorating job) but I reported it to eBay just in case. If it was a misfire shill bid I won’t be holding my breath.

I don’t really need another vice. Just thought that one looked a bit tasty at say £30ish.

Thinking about it, I might actually have a ball vice somewhere…. Istr buying a fixer upper recently.

The winning bidder bid twice, both times just before the auction ended. Once at 3:44:18, with £255, then again at 3:44:40, with some higher amount. He must have really wanted this vice.
Someone else tried to take it away from him at 3:44:40, with a bid of £250. Prior to that bid, the "Winner" was already the high bidder. The preceding bid at 10 in the morning was only £26, so the current bid would be showing as £26 plus the minimum increment, so probably £27. The new bidder at 3:44:40 would have expected to easily beat that with his £250 bid, but to his surprise the Winner had plenty in reserve, so his £250 bid pushed the result up by the £5 increment, to £255, and the Winner still held onto it.

I think you're dead right. I guess my own failed attempt (I had a pittance lined up -£32) was too close to the timing of the failed £250 bid. It did not record my attempt but suddenly offered me a last second chance to "nab" it for a mere £255 which would also have failed.

I don't believe it though. Can't be worth anything like that much to anyone, surely...
