Today I acquired...........

Spotted this at a local auction.

Its a record no 24, very grubby, jaws worn smooth but otherwise in fair used condition. Only problem was that the quick release lever & bar had broken off and were missing. As a result the nut didn't grip the thread & the front jaw slid in & out freely. Not a problem for me, it's just some basic engineering to make one.

So the vice comes up at the sale & I start bidding. Someone else wanted it but I got it for £32 inc fees.

But here's the bonus - at the end of the sale when I went to collect the vice I spot this on the bench.

It's the missing qr lever, I suspect someone hid it under another lot, probably the other bidder!

No matter, I have another vice for little £££ - result!

Ah, that old trick. I remember way back at car auctions, dealers would sometimes swop over a couple of plug leads [in the days when you could see/reach them] so that the car ran like a bag o' spanners and they got it for a song in the bidding.

Or at my local place the tricks would be.

Drop some fresh but old engine oil under timing belt or clutch, so it looked like it was leaking.

On GM loosen the Dizzy cap and turn it, so it ran like a box of bolts.

On Fords remove the lead from the back of the carb, so when they drove it in and braked it would stall. They would never re-start with foot on break.

There are as many cons to reduce the price as there are cars.

I'd be more concerned about the 'pinprick hole'. In my experience if steel is sprouting those sort of leaks it's usually wafer thin.

My experience too.
Some might say that brazing it up probably isn't the 'correct' approach...

This is more night have reaquired as they have been MIA for about 7 years, found while sorting through my lockup

Shock off my daughter's mountain bike, swapped it for a shorter one when she first had it as she was a little too short for the bike. She has asked a few times over the last year or so if I could find it for her

I regularly have the same problem, it not knowing where the bits are, it's knowing "exactly" where they are. They're obviously in the carefully stored material (junkpile) in the warzone I call a workshop... it's all in there, god only knows where though.

I was out this morning, just having a innocent mooch around. Dog and horse was happy to go some were new.

I bean keeping my eye on a set of old stables, now being knocked down. I asked the guys on site if I could "adopt" 2 items.



I have "adopted" the Black smiths odd leg vice.
Plus that weight.

Getting them back to Vicki's stable was easy.
Getting them home will meant I am nearly dead.



PS yes that's the same vice in "Show me your vice", different wall.
