Today I acquired an idea. A brilliant plan.

I bought a used 2 post car lift now 4 years ago It's been outside albeit well wrapped up... but I'm worried about it and my garage extension plans are still shelved for the foreseeable.

So, I figure why not lose my shelves in my front garage and get the lift installed in there. It's an internal single car garage, cavity walls and mid height ceiling in my house.

Before taking the lift apart in the guys garage:

I won't be able to lift a car all the way up and walk below it but it will still make a huge difference for transmission oil changes and cill welding that sort of thing done sitting on stools or similar instead of lying on the floor. And not spending hours jacking cars up to dangerous heights on jackstands which in itself wastes alot of time for me.

So this is my new Christmas project! First thing is what to do with all the stuff on the shelves and take them down. The shelves have got fully packed since photo below.



It will be a tight squeeze but the lift will fit in on plan with 10mm to spare. Will work. Height wise I can just miss the sectional door side rails. Not ideal but as I say having the ability to lift a car 5 - 6 foot off the floor will sure be very useful for me. And when I get to my actual garage extension I'll add 2x more new lifts.

I have another scissor lift already in my back low ceiling double garage with a dead project car on top. Oops.

Might be worth cobbling together an interlock or alarm in case you get a bit too close to the ceiling!

Dickies Insulated Overalls, not acquired today, but first chance to test.

I am generally quite fussy about the fit of overalls but these were free, it's been absolutely baltic + v. windy here today, and I needed the big door to the workshop open making using the heater pointless.


First impression was that the fit isn't perfect, and I'm lucky the set I was given are the tall size or I would be cut in half... But if I go for my customary T-shirt + Rugby Shorts underneath then it's comfy enough.

Second impression was they really do make a huge difference to how warm you are without being horrendously sweaty (which always seems to happen to me if I try to wear layers).

The big revelation was when my hands suddenly started getting so cold that it hurt, whilst the rest of my body was completely normal temperature...

Looked around outside and there's ice crystallising on everything slightly damp out there, but I hadn't noticed the temperature dropping at all as the sun went in.

I might be a convert!

They were advertised at £80 which I thought was a good price until I found the web site, the chap had paid £120 not long ago but offered to come down to £60. I only really need two, and I could have got them from the site, but by the time P&P is on it was heading for £50 for two. The moment I buy two, I'll think of something that needs four. I'm only buying them for one job, and as my shed floor is wrinkly concrete I'm not sure they'll be any use in there afterwards, but I can always move them on. Which of course means keep them forever, just in case.

Purchased an 8mm and 10mm tee handled nut driver's off Ebay. Didn't read the description and got square not hex. Couldn't be bothered with sending them back so cut and brazed sockets on them.

I always forget to check Gumtree regularly been looking for an 8" bench grinder for a while just for the wire wheels side of things as I use that alot, this came up for £10 and ok its not super heavy duty but cheapy 6" one has been going for 30 years now and it gets used all the time

Here is a thought that I know works .
Buy a £40 sheet of 8x4 foot by 15 mm black stock board cut it length wide with a TCT ripsaw blade in a 700 watt or above power saw ( use a board or 10mm strip as a guide and allow for eg 50 mm difference to the actual cut line then you have two decent very long lasting surfaces to roll the dollies along , buy two and you can have an 8x 8 work floor etc etc .
I use both 12 foot long sections off my 18 foot extending ladder & six standard pallets plus eight F clamps to make a temporary flat cutting table & used a full board on top of the lower board to get my straight edges.
When not in use they can be clamped to or leant against a wall well out the way, inside or outside mine have lasted almost 5 years outside in the sun leant against the wall behing our bin locker . .

Yes that's a great suggestion. It will only be me ever operate the lift and it will only be for my saloon cars too.

So I will measure the worst case height and fit a limjt switch to the carriage like the ones on my scissor lift:

Picked up a set of these the other day on an Amazon Black Friday deal

My eye was taken by the facom set on offer for £37 but that was a set of 5, whereas this was a set of 9 for £23.

I like (a lot) facom gear but realistically for the use I have for them this set will do.

I’m actually quite impressed - they have a very “facom” type satin chrome finish, and feel very nice to the touch. Seem quite well finished too, with little/no flash left over from casting which you get with cheaper tools.

The proof of the pudding will be when they get to tackle some rusty old bolts, but first impressions are very good.

Couldn't resist to get at least one nut off ...
Chucked a 21mm socket on the impact.
And attempted to loosen a nut I've been struggling on yesterday with the breaker bar...
I've had no success with the 600mm breaker bar but it gave up instantly with the 3/4" impact.
Discovered a problem
Smaller sockets doesn't work with the detent on the anvil of the impact unfortunately.
Bigger ones fit perfectly

It'll probably be a week or two before I use it in anger, as all my regular templates are designed around my old Clarke PlasmaKing which has a bigger torch/stand-off guide.
The main reason I've bought it, is it has a CNC interface as standard, which might provide me with some motivation to get my plasma table built...

I have one of these in green which I bought as spares or repair from someone on here. I swapped out the batteries for some that I robbed out of an old HP laptop battery pack, and it's been absolutely brilliant. The charge lasts for ages and the light is plenty bright enough to work by.

Money well spent I say - you won't regret byuing it!

With some time using it now, this really is the best worklight I have owned.

Very bright and importantly the brightness stays exactly the same high intensity right up until the battery stops. And after that it won't re light until charged which I prefer actually. Some lesser led lights don't have proper battery control and will keep turning on for seconds at a time after being discharged.

The life of the light is also very impressive. I've got about 5 hours use between charges. The magnet is also very strong which means it doesn't get knocked off easily during use.

A very substantially built 6" center height fixed steady.

My lathe is 6.29" (160mm) center height, but that works quite well for me to make up an adapter to fit the much wider bed.

It could probably do with some bronze tips on the fingers, or adding rollers... Although has clearly been used without either at some point.
