Now it's rolling again (these festive days always bring the flow of goods to such an unpleasant standstill
)
- the posties in the UK in particular have delayed some pieces quite a bit.
First of all, a very nice piece from a fellow forum member "Up North":
Let's see how that good piece comes back, I've been lucky with similar rust-grades before, I think the pitting is not too deep yet ...
It is really remarkable, given the external appearance, that the mechanism works so smoothly, the ratchet is the most pleasant thing I have heard and felt on such a device so far.
While we're on the subject of measuring: I have finally made an expenditure that has always been too high for me ... and would still be too high if this favourable opportunity hadn't jumped out at me:
Not the most extensive, but a complete set of gauge blocks, all in very good condition - as can be seen from Soviet production.
One should not underestimate measuring instruments from the USSR, there was and still is rampant corruption and other irregularities (entire army units that only exist on paper because some officers completely pocket their maintenance costs), but what measuring equipment has left the factories - in large quantities also through the back door - cannot easily be faulted in terms of quality.
Of course, the cushioning foam in the lid of this box was not spared from foam death either, but here, for once, before I had received the object - someone had already completely removed the foam residue crumbs.
And then a parcel arrived from Manchester - with no connection to the forum.
A quick adjustment machine vice with clamping lever mechanism.
You can actually call the thing a machine vice with some justification, there are fastening lugs for screwing it down, the holding force is impressive with lightning-fast operation at the same time - however, it will probably be more at home on the pillar drill than on the milling machine.
Actually, this specimen was intended as a restoration object, but after cleaning and generous oiling, there was nothing left to do now, it's too nice ...
... ok, you could replace the two plastic handles, they are not nice anymore - let's see, the passionate collectors of old tube radios have such tricks for re-casting control knobs, which is supposed to be quite easy if you still have the original knobs to mould ...
And because you don't like to travel alone, a handy little ring-and-mouth spanner was also included.
