Given I've used an adjustable spanner to tighten and untighten it in the past you must have really big donks in Orkney

I only ever use my waterpump pliers to undo these nuts, never ever use the two pin thing, tighten by hand twisting.

When I was a kid I used to collect TV valves from old sets in the local dump. Then place them around the garden they made great exploding targets for air gun shooting.
I think they actually imploded as they are under vacuum but still great fun.

Where is that available from? I made a couple of new earth leads up the other day and ended using brass gauze instead (that is how LV mains / service distribution cables are clamped up in the joints)

Big range on e bay,3 week wait.

I had one and it lasted less than a day. That stupid handle snapped off.

Edit. The best ones were a dewalt I think. They have a 6mm hex instead of the pin spanner fitting. They weren’t about long though

My Metabo has a quick nut but but just has a knurled finish. I always turn the disc to tighten and loosen rather than try to hold the nut.

Tried these nuts on the grinders and like them, acquired ten in a deal. Going to put them on everything.

In desperation to finish the job I locked the spindle & pulled on the disc anti clockwise .. it undid the cutting disc as the nut slacked off .

That was about 11 years go . I've tightened and undone them just by pulling on the disc's ever since. Both on my 4 and 9 inch angle grinders, using resin fibre disc's, tungsten & steel disc's , flap wheels and wire wheels when wearing gloves . So far I've not had one slip or break up on me .

I eventually found the boss spanner some months later on the floor under a bench where I'd no doubt kicked it ..

Yep - I do tend to undo wire brushed with a suitable spanner to save pricked fingers. But everything else, by hand, on the disc, standard nut.

Today I got this, for free. Pawn shop said broken, so I took it home as I have the spare parts diagram and found it was missing part E.

Some rough guesstimate work based on the indent before the spring and some scale measuring between drawing and real thing had a few rough measurements to play with, it was then off to find a good billet of Britool chrome alloy steel. This was duly cut out of spanner 4217 and taken to the lathe for turning and shaping.

I tested the torque wrench against a known-accurate Warren Brown deflecting beam type, and it was spot on. Not bad for an hours work.

Today was a good day.

An assortment of Allen keys from good manufacturers in the (metric) sizes needed on the machines:

What I didn't know yet is that the machine and tool dealer Hahn&Kolb had Wiha make them wrenches with both names on them (and no doubt sold them at three times the price).

Hahn&Kolb is/was such a large and ubiquitous dealer in southern Germany that many today consider them to be the manufacturer of found old machines, probably also because they used to have more durable and visible signs of themselves mounted on the machines they sold ... ... than the actual manufacturers.

Only from Ellix I do not know if they are any good ... now I will find out ... Total price: € 7,00 for all



And then again a case of "I don't know yet if - and if for what - I can use it, but I absolutely must have it", as SWMBO would probably put it:

??? A continuously variable on-the-fly reduction gear !!!

n1=1400U/min, n2=16-147U/min with an output gear not from the same manufacturer (probably planetary gear) whose data I don't know yet.

These speeds give me the impression that something useful could be tinkered with it ...

The sign reads: "Attention! Fill only high quality gear oil with approx. 10°E @ 50°C here!"

It seems to be three standard assemblies of the manufacturer Heynau Getriebe und Service GmbH - product line H-Trieb here, with you H-Drive, in France VARI-HEYNAU - with a fourth assembly of unknown origin.

The company continues to exist, they seem to do good business and if you ever hear a price, they are also very, very proud of their products.

The mentioned oil specification above and the finding of the abbreviation D.R.P. for "Deutsches Reichspatent" (like German Empire Patent), which was actually only used until 1949 at the most, makes me think of a pretty old one, the condition that slowly starts to emerge under all the dirt says otherwise ...

The mechanism as you can see it on the sketch (from their catalog, are they afraid or why such poor drawing quality?) reminds me strongly of a half DAF van Doorne drive.

(In the early 80s in Hamburg, when it got too cold to drive a Guzzi, I used to buy an old DAF with a remaining TÜV/MOT for 50-250 DM, the drive worked like a self-locking differential, as there were no SUVs yet, no one could follow me on slippery roads, one to three at max brought me thru the winter - I love these things, no longer affordable today, I must have had almost a dozen over the years)


The soaking measures are slowly bearing fruit, the thing looks nowhere near as filthy as it used to on the pics.

And after cleaning, I'll go in, I'm really curious.

Those ellix drivers are identical to those branded halfords in the UK, I've had loads (used to work there) and they last well, halfords ones have a lifetime warranty too.
