I'd say it's got something to do with the motor trade. If upholstery, perhaps car seat covers?
Generally canvas or upholstery stretchers have a much wider and sometimes serrated mouth.
I think you’re actually onto something. I cheated and Googled it and there was one sold called something similar. If you look up generic door skin pliers they’re nearly the same.I thought it might be some kind of door skinning pliers.
