It's a scrapped hospital resus trolly, just need to hose all the MRSA off it and it'll make a wonderful tool box. It even has dividers in two drawers.

In our place, this would invalidate the operating licence of the car and the inspector would have a heart attack at the next MOT (here TÜV).

Question: Do you have to register a modification like this, with a type certificate from the manufacturer and a clearance certificate and a case-by-case test, etc.?

Or is it a case of "just work cleanly, then it will look standard, it won't be noticed and no one will ask about it"?

Serious question, by the way, you have no idea what this is like where I life ....

@25.4_mechanic I remember from many years ago reading through the David Vizzard book on tuning the A Series engine, there was a huge section on how to tune the engine in Germany and not fail your TUV inspections

This sort of modification is allowed, you do have to declare it to your insurance company and they usually ask for the source of the modified bits but the UK MOT test wouldn't be a problem. No way of disguising the modifications, they are way different to what's on the stock vehicle

The kit is actually a copy of what you can import from the USA but the cost of shipping and import duty makes it very expensive. Kit form produced in the UK makes it more affordable but still a few £££

Have got a similar setup for the rear, to complete the conversion for both ends of the vehicle it also needs 13 Johnny joints and 2" dia, 1/4" wall tubing, that lot wasn't cheap

Have you found Matts OffRoad Recovery on You tube?

Uses a modified Jeep of some description - seeming with little use of a tape measure, designs, safety gear involved in the modification - but does it work!! And as for his Morrvair . . . I want one . . . Lots of videos of the work they did on the vehicles, as well as recoveries.

Yea, I watch Matt's videos.

When I see what they can do to their vehicles, those are about the only moments when I feel envious of living in that country (and with the size of the properties), otherwise I'm through with them.

Which I realise they measure and calculate and control a lot more than they show.
In the videos, everything is supposed to appear effortless and carefree.

I've also seen FabRats, but I don't like the man and I can't stand his wife ....

So it seems that for you the regulator is a financial one (the insurance), whereas for us it is an administrative one (TÜV/Dekra).

I can still remember that in the 1980s there were several Brits working in my circle in Hamburg, really gifted in bodywork.

I sometimes talked to them about your MOT and the differences to our TÜV - back then MOT seems to have been a pure joke, today - according to what I read here in the forum - it has become much stricter.

But judging by the chassis modifications that seem to be possible, it's still not quite as strict as ours.

Good luck with the work and above all the desired effect in the end!

With Derek Birri and his wife Jessica, at least, it's clear all round: we're only in it for the money, and to that end we're constantly waving the stars-and-stripes.

But it's good entertainment at times, I like the highway timelapse sequences and the humour - but again, the whole hillbilly-that'll-do attitude is just a backdrop for quite a lot of planning and preparation, which you're not supposed to notice.

Quite an intelligent couple with rather intimidated sons, but quite original with his very own terminology that has rubbed off on many others.

FabRats and ViceGrip are worlds apart.
