Were did you get this from?

Anyang Wanfeng Industrial via Alibaba. They were really good to deal with, in fact probably the best Chinese company I've dealt with, and beat their production date by a week.
Getting it sent via air freight was a bit of a killer though, but the total boxed weight was 49kg!

I had it customised with a HTD pulley, as their standard spindle came with a multi V pulley and narrow HTD for driving an encoder, plus I opted for Japanese bearings.

Now I just need to get the rest of the lathe designed...

My copy of Stroud is rather more battered than that - and I've not looked in it since 1992 when I left Uni . . . come to think of it, that might explain the odd thing . . .

A friend gave me 2 to see if I could get them living again.

Damp had got into both motors.
One would trip the main MCB, the windings had shorted out. The rear bearing, under the black cap will also suffer.
The other the damp had taken out the main switch and the noise suppression capacitor.
That made the hair stand up and I tripped the breaker.

Sounds like they are a good idea but a poor design, a bit like the things you see on shopping channels
