Today I acquired...........

It was my father's funeral yesterday so I had a mooch around his garden before we came back from Yorkshire, thought I would bring his 'boot scraper' back with me.


Needs a new hard wood block to retain the blade. Obviously one of the track shoes (?) no doubt from the disused railway that ran along the back of our garden.

The was a couple of very short lengths of rail too.



The top one was used as a weight for all sorts, stabilising the Christmas Tree, as a weight when my mother was pressing tongue (that sounds so wrong ) or brawn, it had many uses.
The second bit, lower left in picture, I don't think I have seen before. Anyone know what this profile would have been used for?

I think mainline rail, I have some pieces, looks similar. would be clamped with the curved clips to wood or concrete sleepers, I think, different to the rail and fixing plate you have. Hole will be for the bolted track joiner at a guess (not a thermite welded join).

That's a bit of flat bottom rail, I made my anvil out of a piece of it. the only thing I have always remembered about it for some reason was it weighs 100 LBs. per yard,

scored a load of tools that were getting shot out to the scrap man .me mate said I could have them . wasn't going to bother thinking they would be crap and just odd cheap made spanners turned out to be 2 full sets of metric gedore spanners engineers hammer mole grips screwdrivers grips stilsons and more in decent nick he said no use for them . hes e building kennels for his dogs and a shed so il wire and do the lights and sockets for him free. I would have anyhows because he did some brickwork round daughters house for nothing

Gedore is good stuff. The Gedore socket set I got for my 16th birthday (45 years ago) is still the mainstay of my socket drawer. That said I do have a very sub par Gedore spanner that says made in India, but The German stuff was good. Good that you can trade skills and help each other out.

Some cheap 3mm letter number stamps
I got a workshop-made rotary table a few weeks ago only issue no numbers on it and didnt want to cock it up with engraver. I will get some practise first.

A leak!
I was testing the new pipework to the toilet using a garden hose connected to the pipe and it blew off!
One knackered brand new heat detector and some dehumidifiing to do!

It would have been bolted to timber sleepers.
They were still using it on the main line in NI (if you can call it that) until fairly recently and there is still some abut on sidings, goods yards and the like.

There should be casting marks on them.

Before H&W went belly up and the yard areas were cleaned up.
They had similar there.
The visiters called them "Paddy Trippers".

The locals called them "Yerfukerfucker." Or similar.

Wish I "liberated" one now.

The chair, thank you for the correct name does not appear to have any casing marks without disturbing the moss and lichen but could be York and North Midland who opened the line through Market Weighton https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/York_and_North_Midland_Railway ( the disused track bed is now a public walk way named after George Hudson, Hudson Way which is amusing as Hudson is my family name) or any of the subsequent NER, LNER, BR guises. Perhaps the lack of casting marks points to the early companies.
As for the sleepers, we acquired a large number when pig sties on the land were demolished, the walls were entirely made from re used sleepers in the fashion of a very well preserved log cabin.
Going through old photos at the moment as you do at these times, I must get some of them scanned and put on Flickr, pictures of the station, trains that sort of thing.

Wish I "liberated" one now.

When they were relaying the Belfast to Larne rail line a few years ago a couple of the chairs were sent to the Titanic Exhibation center because they had 1911 or 1912 cast into them.
Not a bad life span but the line was in a truly shocking state.
