I also got these farrier's rasps. I have no idea yet what I'm going to do with them but on the basis that you never turn anything down, because you'll never be offered anything again.......

i use a saturated solution: as much as will dissolve + extra for luck.

Heat seems to make much more of an impact than increased concentrations in my experimentation.

A bit different to my old dads - oh I dunno - 1950s? Lister D engined, steel wheeled Liner mixer. That would mix nearly two wheelbarrowfulls - I can still hear it now, carb tinkling, cast iron gears grinding, and puffs of ever so slightly black exhaust smoke. Oh, and the water boiling all day. Sorry I sold it, but reallistically had no choice. Some geezer came down from London with a trailer, heck of a long way to come for an old mixer.

I've repaired all sort of mixers from the small barrow mini mix to one ( Cooks ? ) that they used a Bob cat skid steer loader to fill the pan /loading chute & a cable winch to winch up the fully loaded charge pan/ chute .. a batch produced eight or more barrow loads . It stood about 12 feet tall when the chute was fully raised up whilst loading the drum .

Similar to but a bit bigger than this one . It was used for mixing the concrete for pill boxes & defences in WW11.

This had me thinking (I Know, dangerous), I have a boxford wood lathe headstock, absolutely no use for anything, but with the addition of a solid base and a cross slide, could I make one of these? What would I need to hold the tools?

Today I acquired this at the machinery auction at Carlisle. I paid the princely sum of £2 for it.





What is it?




One of these...

It has an asbestos lined head for picking up the unexploded flaming tubes of fiery death.

A quick bit of internet research indicates it dates from about 1940/41. It will be donated to the Dumfries & Galloway Aviation Museum next time I'm passing.

I also picked up a brand new pair of Element II goretex safety boots for £20. I had a pair a while back and really liked them.

I did not acquire this radial arm drill today, sadly. I have nowhere to put it

Unusual for a radial arm not to have a table, looks fairly "modern" too with the boxy shape of the head. I used to go to the Carlisle sale a few years back, but since Junction 36 Machinery Auction got big, I restrict myself to that one.

Carlisle is mostly crap leavened with a very occasional gem.

Same with Lanark.

Never got down as far as the J36 sale so far. Have to give it a look some time.

£18.89 for the lot, have stripped them down and removed the old grease, was more like toffee in some, will clean them up and get organised with which ones for marine grease, general purpose, lithium etc... you cannot have too many grease guns. Seals a bit iffy on some, may turn up a piston with o-ring groove to replace.

Many Thanks to @Arclikeharrypotter for collecting it on his way through and @MattF for a smooth collection.

Popped up to collect from Tom this morning and managed to grab an hour this afternoon to fiddle.

Il take the pulley to the lock up with me later and see if I have a motor that will fit both the pulley and the mounting patterns.
Eventually il make a angle plate so I can mount the little flange mounted 3p and vfd I have kicking around unused on it.


Much prefer the sprung piston over the moving arm they all seem to be now.
As all the blade mounts are removable should be an easy task to make mounts for die files too.

Great piece of kit the Meddings Fretsaw, they used to make a file older to fit it, I had the older version and purchased the holder at the same time as a few spares. They're still in business, so you should be able to get a manual from them, parts aren't cheap though.

Should be easy enough to make a file holder when I've got time. Very pleased with it. Big step up from the little scroll saw I have tucked away.

I will take some snaps of the chuck/tooling fixture, its nothing fancy. I would have thought a collet chuck will do the job.
