Have you tried shining an LED UV torch on it when your in a dark room ? Sometimes that will pick out hidden shades of colour . Another way is to take lots of pictures using

normal light, flash & UV ​

including a few macros and play with the colour gradients, as that also can show faded shades etc.

Using LED UV and differing gradients I helped my Bro in law discover a hidden to the naked eye makers name & date on a sword and also part of someone's family crest & a name who he eventually discovered came from Borrowdale in the Lake District .

American Tap and Die company. Couple of bits missing.

I never set fire to anything but I did put the bunsen burner hose on the water tap. It fires a tiny jet of water a very long way

At last, someone else who's done this! Ive spent almost forty years looking for someone else who's tried this marvelous trick! Its superb, from the back of the class I could hit any target anywhere in the room. I highly recommend it!
