We had ' bunsen burners' at school, wonder if kids have them in science class nowadays ?It was fun lighting the gas taps

Aged 13 , I was an up & coming bright pupil . loved science and the, " What if " way of doing research . I was appointed the schools first Lab technician where during morning & lunch break I'd go to the lab and help set up any gear needed for the next lesson or wash anything up and put it in the drying area. etc.It was fun lighting the gas taps
It was good , I learnt a lot and enjoyed doing it. I loved the responsibility & trust that went with it for within the next couple of weeks there was one lad or lass from each year doing the technician thing in the lab .. it meant I had some wiser pupils to learn from .
One day whilst Neville Dearden our new just out of UNI, curly ginger haired BSC with honours science teacher was called to go down to the school office for some reason or other we were told,
" Right people get on with the experiment's write up ( Hoffmans voltammeter in a back to back double science lesson ) , David, you are in charge ".
After 20 minutes or so most of us had finished our write up and boredom set in . Half an hour had crawled by . A teacher from across the stairwell came in & told us to quieten down & get on with our work, then slammed the door closed on us all .
What happens if you light a gas tap said Phil Archer ( another bright lad ) " Dunno said Anglea " ( A prefect sat to my immediate right ).
Well, being bored & inquisitive , using my " What if " research technique I too lit a gas tap .. only thing is the match head broke off unlit , so I had to get another out the box then strike it .
As the lit match was advanced towards the gas tap that had been on for nearly five seconds a massive yellow propane fire ball some three feet high ran along the top of the bench engulfing the sulphuric acid , hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide ground glass stoppered bottles in neatly set out blocks in front of each pupil along the whole . It so managed to singe two gals hair and cardigans ( to my right the direction where the gas tap was pointing "
It was also pouring down over each side of the bench for a second or so in a six to eight foot long bank of flame from bench top almost to the floor .
I'd managed to turn the tap off whilst engulfed in the fireball, , loosing all my eyebrows & eye lashes & a lot of my fair hair and of course all the hairs on my arms .
I calmly got up , opened all the windows to get rid of the burnt pork arma ,. after a few minutes of clean air I closed them and had just managed to sit down when ..... There was a thundering noise on the stairwell & Nev came in red faced & slightly out of breath ." Who the hells been burning something " he demanded .
Being 100 % guilty and also realising there was no escaping the fact it was me I owned up immediately & told him what I'd done ... Brrrrrrringgggg school the bell went for lesson end . " Sit still …. " he bellowed .
We all sat rock still as he said shouted the mortally wounding words " Gould, you're banned from ever being in the lab without me or another teacher being here .. If I or they have to leave the room so do you ….. understand . Now get out of my sight the lot of you ".
I got banned from the science lab as a technician and several times had to stand outside the lab when he or the supervising teacher was called away .
Strange thing is none of my fellow classmates screamed or cried, at dinner time that day they pizzed themselves laughing about it and recounting the amazing spectacle they'd witnessed .

It was fun lighting the gas taps
Run a length of hose from the gas taps into a container of very soapy water, you get streams of very flammable bubbles. I vividly remember watching flame roll over the ceiling!

From what i have been told kids now do not do experiments like i did at school, Basically the teacher does them and the kids write a report on it and upload it to the teacher..

Just asked my lad he is 13 , they do experiments and burn stuff , they also have 3D printer , small laser cutter / engraver, mill, lathe etc , he’s doing engineering , computers and sciences as his gcse options , loads of sports too , also lots of extra clubs in lunch and after school, they really do a lot with them, week skiing in Austria earlier this year , and hopefully a week at SERN Hadron collider next autumn.
Ordered some lathe tooling from Banggood & received it in a few days due to it being in the UK warehouse. Still waiting on some spare inserts as they are coming from China but I'll do a review for the site when I get everything.

Keep your eye on that caliper. I had a Hilka branded one, the zero was unstable and readings all over the place, sometimes doubling. It used to switch between metric and imperial by itself too.
I replaced it with a Moore and Wright one which has been perfect so far.
