Spotted a Makita belt sander which uses the same size belt as my old skil sander that packed up and i had loads of belts for then i got a double sided Guinness clock for my man cave and lots of bolts pins nuts and washers a big tin of car interior trim fixings and a Russian mulimeter

Old Russian electrical stuff is weird, I had a radio, and to change from VHF, SW ect you rotated a big knob on the side and the whole PCB inside spun round to different contacts !

Looked like the Flintstones designed it.

Today I acquired a working pair of Antex C15 soldering irons. One burned an element out about 25 years ago, and pre-internet the price of a replacement element was scandalous locally. I bought another one, but always wanted to get the first one working again, as it went against the grain to chuck it. These days the C15 has long been superceded, but there's plenty of old stock around and elements are relatively cheap, thanks to the internet.
I thought I'd better get some more tips while I was at it, but bought the wrong ones. Happily enough I scored a dirt cheap, nearly new XS25W for them.

Today I also suddenly remembered I'd made a couple of table-top lamp dimmers years ago but no longer use them. Perfect for a crude form of temperature control, but more importantly, to extend the life of the Antex elements by avoiding cold start-ups and inrush current, and possibly by just running them under max output as they normally do, seeing as I'm right next to the power pig on the electric pole and I often get over 240V, which doesn't do them much good, considering they're rated at 230V.

I worked on a Russian seismic survey ship for four years, some of the engine and compressor room equipment had to be seen to be believed, Elf and safety...... I think the Russian people and engineers in particular are the living breathing epitome of the mothers of invention

Such a simple thing, I thought. Find a company on line I have dealt with before. Place and order, plus next day delivery. Pay money, wait.
That was Saturday.



Here it is, mug for scale.
But I hear you cry it is Thursday, you paid for next day delivery.
I did.

Monday arrived and I got a package.
A sledge Hammer Handle.
Ring the supplier, confirm with images and parts number. They agreed to resend the correct order, yes we double check.
Tuesday arrives, I get a parcel.
No.
I get a Pick axe handle.



On the phone, but it had to wait until Wednesday. Go through it all again. I am assured that this time it will be correct. She will pick the order herself. Not depend on the person who had made 2 mistakes.



Today it arrived, with a letter saying I can keep the 2 extra handles or return them for a refund on the cost of the adze handle. In other words I get it free.
I choose to keep the extras.

I have now stained the Hammer and pick axe handles, all 3 are soaking in Linseed oil.

@ TYA are those handles expensive ?

I have a genuine Welsh miners pick axe head made by Ewel as far as I can see it's never been used but it is well rust pitted.

At sometime in the past someone tried to fit it up with a wooden pick helve, not doing a very good job & hammering goodness only knows how many nails & screws in the head to try and tighten it up on the helve , . it flapped around in the breeze . The handle is also full of wood worm .

I have a three foot x 5 inch dia length of 5 yr old seasoned ash split in half along its length , been thinking of using it to try and bespoke make a new shaft but if they are available ready made and around a tenner I might take that route . Can you advise please ?

The adze was £18, what was an average price for on line and in shops.

The average price is between £14 and £20 for long wooden handles

I have had Pick axe shaft as low as £6. I did get staff discount as I was "working " on site.

Shop around, you will be surprized what prices and handles you will find. I found a tool supplier what had Adze handles in a catalogue, but had a lead time of 3 days.

Decent garden centres, with a Landscape centre may have handles.

My local old fashioned hardware shop has all sorts of handles, but you need to ask and know were to look.

I have used a copy lathe in the past to make handles, but getting a decent blank to turn into a handle is difficult now. It makes it expensive.

You will find on the Bay of fleas your miners Ewell with a standard shaft. But Each pit/area would have a design local to that area.

Like the turret tuners in old TV sets. We had one with a motorised turret tuner in it. You moved a slider to the required station and a motor turned the turret. It made a noise like muffled gunshots.

Iv found with a lot of Aldi and lidl tools the supplied blades or bits aren’t worth even tryin we had an sds that was brilliant till there bits were used same with grinders and saws . Worth tryin a decent blade for timber in it

Interesting, my bandsaw blade has just given up the ghost, after hardly any use at all.

Got a few holes to drill for job as the steel supplier didn’t bother or the project manager forgot, no ones owning up to it.

Done.
Well the Linseed oil is freshly applied.
The head is a snug fit, sealed in 1 wedge and pine resin.
Yes, the wedge is not traditional.
But it just spreads the shaft end enough to secure it. With out a fair amount of re working it.

It is designed to be used, I will used it. So a compromise on tradition and practical use.
