A 2mtr length of 100x50 galvanised RHS that literally fell off a lorry and 6 plywood crate tops from slate crates that were dumped at the back of my cab this morning.

The plywood will be turned in to warmth and an orange glow in due course

Back in 1997 on my small mammal farm I ran my land drain pipes diagonally. One every 1.5 mtrs.across the bank on the batter about 2 feet back covered to top ends in three layers of rubble sack & cable tied in in place . I terminated them in a 1 mtr x 600 wide sump the length of the wall on the filled side then out to a lower level ditch via an 8 inch rigid plastic pipe set under a 2 mtr wide pathway . The trench was lined & covered with a commercial permeable fleece type membrane to help filter out any sand & silt , filled it with clean 2 inch black limestone . The back fill over the soil bank was small stone & grit scrapings off the bed of the disused railway line that ran through the property

I put in a 300mm sump when I excavated the hillside behind our project house, but its no longer necessary now as I put the drainage lines behind the retaining walls to redirect the effluent away from the patio as what was seeping out of the ground appeared to be septic, and I didn't want to put the usual weep holes in the walls for it to drain on the future paving.

Back on topic. . . . . . . Today I acquired some stainless steel, aluminium, and brass; no fabrication required. Finally found the Gold Standard of camp cooking kits, a complete early vintage Swedish Army mess kit, with the rare to find stainless steel pots. Christmas is sorted, for me at least, lol.

I looked at the black perforated type, but wanted a stiffer straight pipe which I could properly set level behind the walls.

And today I acquired some good news, my tax withholding has finally been refunded.

I used pea gravel.

I used pea gravel.

I wanted pea gravel, but chippings as they are called on this side of the pond were what was available locally; but worked just fine. I used my transit to level the pipe every few feet and covered it with membrane and chippings as I went along. Before installation I also pointed the back side of the walls as they were erected, and then coated them with bitumen.

Only a few months old.

Nooteboom fully steered double extending tri-axle trailer. Hydraulic "Command" steering on all 3 axles via a wedge that fits into the jaws of the fifth wheel, with the ability to disengage the hydraulics and steer the bogie with either a plug-in wander lead or a remote fob. Extendable to 29 metres and can operate up to 80 tons gross weight under "Special Types" authorization.

I've been wandering around with it stretched open to 20 metres since Monday, (half as long again as a standard trailer), and it's an absolute joy to pull. Because of the steering axles, the back end doesn't cut across same as a normal semi trailer, so when I turn left, the trailer steers to the right and follows the unit round. The only drawback to that is that I have to be incredibly wary of other vehicles when making tight turns, hence the escort van behind me keeping in constant contact by 2 way radio.

Thery're expensive and sophisticated pieces of kit, but necessary for some of the sites we get to. And they're great show-stoppers when fully extended and under the control of a steersman.
