Poor show at car boots today, I am after a few items for friends and groups.
Today two car boots were a wet soggy affair, no normal regulars, very few. So slim pickings.
But I did get a few items, one item of my "TYA To Acquire" list.
Paint spray gun. I was asked to get one for a Green house misting system. I suspect next year will not be as hot as this year. But I was asked and I got.
Pen Knife, a few will say it is a horse person knife for getting stones out of hoofs etc. I have found a broad arrow on it and 2 letters, RN, stamped on it. There is a hint of a name and more stampings, hoping a Service Number or a Stock number.

Yesterday was a better day, apart from the two hammers I got a few other bits.
My neighbour had a fence post rot out and I gave him a hand to did out the lump on concrete and fit a new one. But in the lump of concrete I found some reinforcing steel. I have since broke it out and use the smashed remains of concrete to hold the shuttering in place for the new post.
Here is the steel.
Looking at the shaft hole it is a old design.
A few may recall I got this old wooden plane.
Cleaning up it had a few markings on it. A name and a and a city.
The Name is Edwards, the makers name is Glasgow.
I had to slip into my local rummage shop yesterday, had to be done.
There I found these two.
They were tidy, but the past clean up just solidified the dirt. But there was the same name stamped in, Edwards. I now own them.
They are now being cleaned, restored and they will be investigated to their history, as much as I can.

I've got one of those knives somewhere, was issued to my dad when he joined the navy in WW2, the spike is for opening the weave on ropes when splicing.

Also known as a pussers dirk, issued to those in the seamens branch, could well have a name or service no stamped on it , as said the spike was for splicing , I was issued one back in the 60s,

Bit of history for your knife perhaps .
It looks to be one of the older pattern around with a set of strange black Bakelite type scales that were hard as nails ..not sure what a modern issued knife looks like theses days. Does it have a lobster claw can opener as well as the blade & spike ?
I doubt it would have been stamped with a persons details as the letter & number stamps in most stores were only about 1/4 inch high & used for stamping you dog tags by hand. Trying to stamp the blade would soon see the stamps wrecked so any stamping if nice & neat along a good line will most likely have been done at manufacture .
It seems it's an old ww2 style Willy Dobson's , ( The campers pocket knife with his initials either side of his ridge tent ) The arrow is called the mark of ordnance from the days when canons & warlike materiels were made for the government not individual armies .
The initials RN will most likely mean it was a sailors & the spike used for removing crossed teeth out of a sea horses snout (
) Pussers ( PURSERS aka to the normal world as quartermasters ) were reluctant to have anything on board " THEIR " ship that wasn't Willies as it usurped their power to control the sailors & officers . 
Actually if the spike is straight rather than slightly curved it was most likely a naval pattern one , the spike was used when splicing thinnish tight rope .
When looked after they can be made razor sharp and will keep their edge very well . The spike was not only a throwback to the days of horse transport in the army, it was also brilliant for puncturing two holes opposite each other in a can of condensed milk for the coffee swindle.
The early models pre mine were a fair bit thinner on the scales and had a more square end at the carrier ring /loop . they were also a fair bit lighter .
Those pocket knives used to be on general issue, I got mine on 10 May 1966, the date stamp was 1948 , I had to hand it back into the stores for a brand-new shiny stainless steel one in 1973 . The new one was utter crap, a piece of string would have been sharper .
The blade self folded quicker & easier than a politician resisting a brown envelope . I saw badly cut fingers on several lads who had had the blade fold up over their fingers when using it .. not a pretty sight .
It was only good for tying on to a length of para cord or Don 10 telephone wire as the weight, to sling the cord/wire up over a tree branch .
Being made of stainless steel you daren't use it when it was minus 17oC or so incase it stuck to your skin as you tried to open it . Nor was it sensible to use if covered in cam in a lay up point as the shiny steel made a good reflector that could show strong sun from miles & miles away .
I had to ask for a new knife a few months after getting the new stainless steel one when the blade's pivot pin broke as I was trying to cut a bit of 1/2" thick webbing strap with it … never took the new one out it's wrapper , so handed it back six years later in Dec 1980 unused and still in it's original wrapping .
My own ( lock ) knife was kept in my mechanics tool box, made of a 4 " tempered carbon steel blade hand finished with a pair of rosewood scales , razor sharp and big enough to hold when your hands were freezing cold .

That pick axe looking thing is a builders or roadman's mattocks it looks like it's made from two bits of forged steel rather than drop forged from a single billet .
Have you got a picture of the shaft's hole looking down from from above

Yesterday.. from a junk shop I brought :-
A seized up set off Moore & Wright
Then three 12 " Sandvik 18 tpi blue hacksaw blades, covered in thick sticky oily crud . They cleaned up with WD40 & the pad to reveal ...no one has use the blades.
Next was a 1/2 " twist drill that has seen better days , at the shank it looks like it is a variable pitch threaded maypole . Gave it a quick sharpen on the grind stone .. lovely... a quality HHS drill steel . I'll turn all the chavelled mess off the drill shank using the finest feed my lathe does ( 0.001877 thou ) to make it like a blacksmiths drill with a nicely finished shank .
There was also an 8 inch 200mmm graduation etched /stamped Swedish style try square with a stainless steel blade riveted in three places into some sort of hard grey cast metal handle . It was slathered in set fibreglass resin & spots of dried hard varnish . Gave it a WD 40 spray came in had my lunch and went back to clean it .. every thing came off remarkably easy when using a bit of 1/2 " wide square rod
Finally I got a nifty pair of little single hand use pop riveter pliers ... again covered in sticky dirty crud . More WD 40 and a few minutes with the Scotchbrite pad revealed them in their glory .
I gave them a trial run & pulled a 3/16 x 1/2" duralumin rivet with ease. , changed the guide collet to the smallest , it is the same ...… no slippage on the rivet nails at all . . Months ago my own £ 8 riveter's handles collapsed when pulling up a 1/8 aluminium rivet so I'm chuffed to bits with this one.
Might go back to the place tomorrow as there was also a small steel tool box 3/4 full of the same heaving gunge on several thousand assorted industrial rivets , plus there are another two riveters in slightly bigger sizes also in the box.

eeler blades …. 25 to 7 thou then down in halves of a thou to 1 thou unfortunately the 1 & 1.5 thou blades were torn out /off but it's good enough for what I'll be using them for . Had to dismantle them & clean the blades & carrier with WD 40 and a Scotchbrite pad to get rid of a bit of oxide & years of muck down by the hinge pin end so they open & close freely once again .Then three 12 " Sandvik 18 tpi blue hacksaw blades, covered in thick sticky oily crud . as a pusher. On testing the accuracy now the crud is off the handle's working face I couldn't see any run out over the 8 inch lines I'd scribed on my workbench's steel plated top. I have a clean of the pick axe, I have found 3 interesting marks on it.
The first is a "broad arrow" and short Store number on it.
The Other is the US government stamp and a date of 1940. and finally a 6 digit stamp.
The Pick axe head is part of the equipment fitted to British army vehicles, in this case a Scammel Heavy tank transporter.
The 6 digit number is the vehicle ID stamp. Unique to each vehicle. This was found out through The Bovington Tank Museum achieves. I am waiting to see if they can supply any more information.
The tool is double stamped as it is "Lend Lease" agreement. Brought by the ministry of supply, from the US government supplier and then stamped for British forces use.
It is now sat on the floor waiting for me to source a decent shaft and time.

The Seaman's Clasp knife has got some history to it.
It has a name and a ships book number stamped onto the handle. Ships book number is the last 3 digits of a Royal Nay Sailor service number. My local British legion is looking into the name and number for me.
There is a date stamp, 1943, but that is over stamped an older number. My guess, based on experience, is that it was issued, returned for repairs and re issued.
The standard broad arrow is there, as to be expected. But next to that is a Maltese Cross.
So it has bean on good journey.
Up to the time when the RN left Malta, March 1979, local issued slops (Naval Clothes and personal equipment issues" were always stamped with the arrow and a local stamp. I still have my Rigging kit with a Hong Kong stamp, well one I acquired when I was there. Oddly Gibraltar was just a "G" stamped.
A lot of the extra stamps were put on by service people in Detention Quarters serving their time. I spent a week stamping uniform buttons in Pompy.
