Great bench there BadgerTook a mosey around the scrapyard opposite to our place yesterday morning and there sits exactly what I'm after for the cellarit never ceases to amaze me what people throw away ! The workbench is like new !!

...your not wrong about stuff people bin,on saturday i picked up a perfect engine stand with the full bellhousing bolt kit and a 6 drawer tool chest,Ok the chest is Clark but ideal for bits and pieces under the bench

Tell me about, in recent weeks I missed out on an anvil and swage block 
But I have had some brilliant finds. A local POSH school was getting rid of their john deere gator in the scrapyard. The gator needed a new tyre and a wheel bearing ( I kid you not )
I bought it from the scrapyard for £150 and sold it on for a good profit

Great cupboardy bench thing ... around here it's the complete oposite , nothing apsolutely nothing gets chucked until it's totaly knackerd .... I get little old ladies in the village (who what a picture of the grandsons hung on the wall ) rumage in the kitchen drawer for three rusty bent nails ...."its ok jeff I've got some nails "......Thing is they still remember the hard times when there was 'nought ....

Oh fraptious day! After many years of searching today i acquired a fine old marine engine for my old Saunders Launch, its a Gaines Universal straight 6 sidevalve, Probably about 1930, not sure on capacity but probably about 2.5 ltr rated at approx 65hp. Its been sitting in a barn up on a storage rack for at least 35 years & was supposedly rebuilt before it was stored. It will be interesting to see what condition its in internally. Heres a photo taken after we got home & brushed several birds nests & years of dust off it. Doesnt look too bad at all!

What a beast!, what's the shaft sticking out of the side next to the propshaft drive?
Its a manual gearbox, thats the gearbox selector shaft, just needs a handle for it, as it happens the old boat it came out of is still laying derelict on the same farm & its very likely i will be able to pull the matched propellor & controls plus instrument panel out of it. There is also a spare new cylinder head, manuals & other documentation to go with it but they havent surfaced yet. Fingers crossed!
Not sure quite how heavy it is but there is a lot of iron in it! I suspect approx 800lbs maybe more.
Later int evening update, Just been spannering on it, spark plugs obviously have never been used & all came out easily, put a shot of oil down each pot. Pulled the flywheel cover off & the ring gear doesnt look like its done much & i was able to start turning it over by hand.
The oil looks like it was put in yesterday. Put fuel in it & i reckon it will start.
Gearbox is a bit dirty inside so will need cleaning out & checking over. Nice winter project i think!

Is that gearbox the type of gear change that pushes forward for forward and pulls back for reverse incorporating some sort of clutch, Looks very similar to one that my brother had years ago?

Yep thats the type, they often have cone clutches or sometimes multiplate ones. It has a Paragon nameplate inside the box.
It Seems that Gaines were the importers in Brentford middlesex & the engine was made by Universal motor co in Oshkosh wisconsin.
They built industrial, automotive & marine engines, Used in forklifts, Welding sets Generators etc.
Out of interest their Atomic four a very similar sidevalve unit enjoyed an unbroken production run from the 1920's right up until 1978 & were fitted in many thousands of lifeboats, fishing boats & yachts.

While wandering around the scrapyard yesterday morning I chanced upon a stihl magnum chainsaw and a cast iron fish. The fish had part of its tail broken off and I thought what the hell I would see if I could bring him ( or her ) back to life. It was my first go at tig welding and I must say at the present time I am better with mig lol
Reckon I need to find somewhere local to learn to do it properly instead of hoping for the best. It was not a complete failure for first time but I would of liked it to have been better.

Is the saw a Stihl 038 magnum ? They did magnum versions of a few saws and they were a bit larger capacity than the standard ones. Our scrapyard never has interesting stuff, just boring cars

I had one of those on an old twin cylinder Lister. It was very basic, a chain drive and a gear drive with just a dog clutch to swap between the pair.
