I had to use one of them one summer, got really quick at using it The roller shutter door at uni has a hand chain drive, obviously never been used for years, so when I took my lathe out I operated it to find someone had helpfully greased the entire chain, in a wood workshop -____- my hands were a different colour after!

Acquired this, how do I go about testing it, does it need a motor starter or something or can I just put a plug on it and go ?

Its less than 2 amps.

I only have a generator on site.

Does anyone want it if it works ?

Depends how big it is! Can you post up another pic with a British Standard tea mug for scale?

If it's not a monster I'd like it for my forge!

Take a picture of the sticker on it and show us. From the wires, it looks like standard 230v single phase. As you say, put a 13A plug on it and see.

My dad used to say, Whatever you have someone wants and whatever you want someone has, I will often ask if something is for sale in a non pushy non dealer way, you never know.

I was once given similar advice at of all places, an engine reconditioning shop, when the owner operator said: "If you're ever after something, tell everyone you meet, someone will have it or will know someone else who has"
It's proved almost faultless advice down the years.
I was once after an old chainsaw to restore, ended up with a 45cc McCulloch and two Partners; one 50cc and the other 70cc.
As you say, always pays to ask.

One of the charity shops I go to regularly I always ask what other stuff they have. The older ladies now me well enough that I am not interested in clothes and nic naks.

I am not always lucky, but as you can see I do get some interesting finds.

That laser pointer was such a find. The shop was not sure if they could sell it, they saw it as "Gun Thingy".
So I got it. They got some ££££ and some choccy hob nobs.
I got a Christmas present for a friend.

Yep, I've now tested it and its fine. Brand new in fact.

1.2 amp 240 v single phase, 875 rpm.

I shall put it on the for sale section soon.

I'm sick of using the plastic fuel container, it's a pain to use when it's full as the sides wobble and it's started leaking when I pour it using the nozzle. Today I went to find a better one!

It cost me $40 and says 10-1952 which I presume is a filling date. The rubber seal was perished, I packed in two new templates cut from rubberised carpet tile, they seem to work well. Also got a clip on spout coming in the post, $10 didn't seem bad at all.
