There was a time when people knew that what was sold under the name ElektraBeckum was clearly of heavy craftsman quality, for people who have to do their daily work with it.

For a few years, this was no longer so clear-cut; entire units and/or subassemblies are sometimes bought in and a much broader market is served.

Your machine, however, is almost certainly still in the first group of serious machines that, if treated and maintained properly, can be used for a very long time.

Since 1999, ElektraBeckum in Meppen on the German side of the Dutch border has belonged to the Metabo Group, so no further slippage is to be expected.

I still have my Elektra Beckum mig welder, from the mid eighties in my workshop
I'm not sure of its quality, though it did weld reasonably well for 20 years.

I would definitely call that "the good times", the chop and pull saw above shouldn't be much younger either.

It has 1996 on the rating plate - not sure if that relates to the year or not , but I have a feeling these original KGS300 saws date from around the early to mid 90s.
They replaced them with the 301 model at some point, looks like essentially the same unit with a motor brake which I believe was made to around 2008.

It has some nice touches, such as a bronze washer on the clamp, but then the preset mitre detent is plastic, so bit of a mixed bag design wise. Overall it seems quite sturdy.
The induction motor is nice and smooth, but it definitely needs a modification to retrofit a motor brake as it spins forever.

On the other hand it was pretty cheap and only about a mile away.

I think Norbar make the best torque wrenches. I have a new Britool one on the work van and it's cheap and nasty (unlike my older ¾" Britool) and a Wera which isn't great, yet quite expensive. The Snap-on TechAngles are good, but they're getting on for £400 each.

Interesting. They used to be made Precision Instruments i think. I have one older Snap-on one and it's really nicely made. My two TechAngles are really nice, but so expensive. They're great for engine work and such where you need to do the angle too.

Another £300-worth of Sprinter parts. If i was paying labour for the work it needs i'd be broke.



Some nice new Hazet XZN and hex bit sockets, Facom sliding T-handles, Koken 27mm socket, Stahlwille 15mm and Snap-on 15mm swivel socket for Land Rover hubs.



And finally some Norton wire brushes and rapid strip discs. Annoyingly the 3-piece set has hex shanks, so won't fit my die grinder.

Got a Teknik 25mm dia APKT16 cutter today and promptly chopped a chunk off. I had gone for the longer length as it has a longer reduced shank area than the shorter one.
Seems nice and the inserts for aluminium seem to be pretty good as well. Not sure where they are actually made, says Scorpion Carbide and looked up and they are a UK manufacturer but....

First test taking a full width cut at 3mm deep.
