I know it won't get much heat in there, but owts better than nowt. It's as much for keeping it steady under the weight of the flue pipe, and a bed of sand will be a nice thing for burning wood. Saves me farting about fitting any type of grate/plate in there if I just fill it with sand.

for stability weld some L shape brackets on and bolt it down
if you are burning wood you dont need a grate
freecycle ebay gumtree etc and keep an eye out for an old night storage heater and stack the bricks around the back and sides of the heater

IIRC Aga / Rayburn recommend 330c for the temp of the 'hot' hotplate on their oil fired ovens.

We have a solid fuel rayburn, and a kettle wont boil easily at less than about 300c (i know water boils at 100c, but you would never boil a kettle on a 100c plate). At that running temp, the flue gas hovers around 120c ish.

...however ; )

We regularly get the rayburn plate up to 500c ish. My IR thermometer only goes up to 560c, but there have been times when the whole plate has been glowing cherry (650c ish, i think, for cast?)

...but, even then, the flue gas temps are only about 250c. This is a big lump of cast (or, more accuratly, a load of smaller castings screwed together) but i never ceases to amaze me quite how much temperature it can suck out of the gas between the fire box (>700c, id guess) and the exit point (<200c normally) This will confuse things against a simpler design, but, still....

(in short, my findings are in line with sardine's above!)

note: i wouldnt do it again, as its all a bit fearfull, but ive cast cup-cake alluminium ingots using half a disposable welding cylinder as a crucible in the rayburns firebox, without coal... (and even then the flue gas was probably exiting at <300)

I've given up car boots in the south, they're all watching cash in the attic and want silly money for junk.

I use to go to one near saafend (Southend for those of you not from the area) every week (chap who ran the burger vans for the whole site used to give me his used fryer oil!) and a lot of times i would spend nothing at all.

...but those times were offset by when you went home with a full boot for less than a score.

I think car boots would be a tedious way to earn money (as in buying to sell on again) but, if youre just wandering around, not on the clock, theyre entertaining enough.

We have friends here who go to the same one (the Exeter one) and its fun to call in theirs on the way home for a cup of tea or two, and compare hauls!

(im sure, to some people, the whole lot would sound like the dullest torture!)

A friend bought himself a new compressor, so sold me his old one for £20 (what he paid for it years previous). Small, old, belt driven thing. Ill take a photo tomorrow.

(i have a 14cfm direct drive, but it does not like voltage drop, and makes a right racket, hence the interest in a smaller, belt driven)

Today yesterday I acquired a Starrett tap/drill size poster.

Not an "I acquired..." post, more like a "I lost a..." post.

While I was 40 miles away on Monday, the neighbours skip attracted a pikey, you know, like flies around that other stuff.

Once he'd had a root around the skip he decided to give our house a visit and, having banged insistently on the door and then intimidating my wife, proceeded to enter the back garden and help himself to a copper heating cyl (was going to become an earth connection for my radio stuff), some steel and the motor off my lathe (dismantled and waiting to go into the garage). He also took a small box that contained the nuts and bolts that held the lathe together and the gibb strips for the slides.

She phoned me in a panic and couldn't get hold of me. By the time I found out it was 3hrs later and, bless her, she hadn't phoned the police. I got onto them, but as I was in a Met Police area, they took the call, assured me it would be 'dealt with' and 'handed it on' to Essex Police, who then effectively ignored it.

Bearing in mind that I made the call at about 4pm on Monday, and I won't get to talk to a copper until 9.30 tonight I think I have a right to be:
- Pretty pee'd off
- Quite irate that, when I phone it in I was emphasising that the git in question was intimidating my wife, who has since been really down about it all.

Be interesting to see what Plod will say tonight.
I now have a pile of castings that used to be a lathe (the motor had all the attachment castings still bolted on and the top slide has gone too) and a wife that's afraid to go out.

Sadly, trespass in this country is merely a civil offence. We do a lot of business with gypsies and in general they are a decent bunch. So much so that I normally take them at their word when ordering installations. The last one we did screwed us for £200 when he refused to pay and subsequent visits to their site resulted in a menacing wall of thugs. They wonder then why people have negative opinions of them.

I had 4 alloys lifted off my back garden which have cost me £150 to replace today - second hand. I still need to fork out for a full set of 5 new tyres which is what that money was earmarked for. Not a happy camper!

heres the answer. if u saw a £20 note in someones garden chances are most people would sneek in and take it . scrap men see your metal and to them its just scrap but they get £20 quid for it by sneeking in and pinching it it i never leave anything metal on show and allways lock the double gates when im out so they cant just walk or drive in .90 percent are thieveing scrotes but not all
