Thanks Hopefuldave, I'll have a look at the linksA KB KBIC240 DC controller (mains to motor) is good, but not that cheap, there are also Chinese copies (the real KB are mostly surface-mount, the Chinese old-school leaded components - so easer to fix if/when they go wrong), they'll give you presets for max current limit, min / max speed, acceleration and IR compensation (stabilises speed), needs a single external potentiometer for setting speed and a "HP resistor" that plugs into the board to match the motor (e,g, a 2HP for that motor). There are also "cheap" all-in-one motor controllers on EvilBay...
Alternative is a fairy chunky bridge rectifier (e.g. 10A, 400v) fed from a thyristor/PWM controller capable of 6 amps or more, doesn't get the clever features you'd get with the KB or clone, though and there's the risk you could over-volt it.
