Tig collet material , why not steel?

Have fun replacing collet bodies and back caps if you use steel. Do you think the welding equipment manufacturers are having you over by using copper. If steel worked do you not think the Chinese would be pumping them out.

Exactly, and they still sell you copper collets.

CK, Binzel, WeldTec (320A WP20 torches) all sell copper collets.

Buy a wedge collet and forget about it. Not only do they not squash/twist like standard ones, they grip short tungsten much better.
Can't remember the last time I had a new collet in my torch. Months and months ago.
Not bad for someone that uses it day in day out.

Basically they're copper because of the electrical conductivity is massively better than steel, plus the heat transfer is something like 4x that of steel.

If it's not making good electrical contact with the tungsten, I'd think there's a good chance it will try and arc out elsewhere inside the torch.
I mean once the steel collet has been heat cycled quite a few times and it starts to corrode, the conductivity will likely get even less.
